Scrum V: 2023 Rugby World Cup

That's a wrap from us, thanks for joining the Scrum V team as they dissected Wales' Rugby World Cup opener.

It was a close one, but I think we can all agree it was the best game of the tournament so far.

    Au revoir for now.

So after painting the town red in Bordeaux, Wales now travel to Nice to face Portugal next Saturday before further group games against Australia in Lyon on 24 September and Georgia in Nantes 13 days later.

The Fijians face Australia in St Etienne on 17 September in a match that still could define which two sides achieve quarter-final qualification from Pool C.

Fiji took two losing bonus points from the Wales game, which might prove critical in terms of the group's finishing places and race for a last-eight spot.

South Africa were very impressive against Scotland.

I did say New Zealand will win the World Cup, but I also said they'd lose to France so I got the first step right at least!

Without being too disrespectful to Portugal we can change the whole team and give players a rest.

You couldn't ask for a better game for us, while Fiji have to play Australia.

I think there will be a lot of changes for the Australia game, it is a bigger game, you would have thought going in to the Portugal game we would be favourites.

Scrum V: 2023 Rugby World Cup

Wales now travel to Nice to face Portugal next Saturday in what is a six-day turnaround.

After the bruising battle against the ferocious Fijians, we wait to see whether there are sweeping changes.

"We've got a very strong group here in terms of a squad to select for this game, we have to perform against Portugal," said forwards coach Jonathan Humphreys.

"It's not an easy game, it is their first game in this tournament. They are a tough side to play against, they are very skilful.

"We don't see this as pressure off. It's just the next game, and we have to perform."

  9. Balancing actpublished at 09:39 British Summer Time 11 September 2023

Scrum V: 2023 Rugby World Cup

Wales forwards coach Jonathan Humphreys says his side sometimes over-played in certain parts of the field.

"We wanted high ball in play, that was a big one for us," said Humphreys.

"Throwing the ball about in your 22, and a greasy ball, is not necessarily what we had actually planned for. We talk about heads-up rugby, and if it is on, we will go.

"There were probably a few times in that first half we could have perhaps taken a different option.

"It is certainly within our scope to play what's in front of you. But there were a couple of times there, maybe not."

You've got to be careful how you speak to players, Dan Biggar lost his head and rightly so.

I know it can be negative to certain players but it was a poor decision by George North, it was understanding the situation from a man who had 100 caps for Wales.

Rightly or wrongly that's how Biggar reacts.

George North did suck it up but I don't think he would have liked that, we know he's passionate and competitive but maybe he needs to settle down a bit.

Dan Biggar's outburst at George North for not kicking the ball out before half-time has sparked debate.

Josh Navidi was not a fan.

"I don't like that from Dan Biggar, you don't need someone screaming at you, it is one of those situations. I'm not a massive fan of it," he said.

Thumbs up if you think Biggar was right or thumbs down if his outburst was uncalled for.

Wales have got the win they needed against Fiji, so do you think they now make it out of the group stage?

Give a thumbs up if you think Wales will make the quarter-finals, thumbs down if not.

  14. 'Adams excellent'published at 09:34 British Summer Time 11 September 2023

Liam Williams was excellent in defence because the number of times Fiji were outside of Wales and Williams made that tackle so Fiji had to recycle.

Will Rowlands was good, Dan Biggar controlled the match, disappointed to miss that one penalty but otherwise near perfect off the tee.

It was a squad effort, you have to mention Josh Adams' tackle on Selestino Ravutaumada, he absolutely nailed him, Adams was excellent.

It was that point Wales were bossing it and they won the game, put enough points on the board.

  15. Captain Morgan's bootpublished at 09:29 British Summer Time 11 September 2023

Scrum V 2023: Rugby World Cup

Wales captain Jac Morgan showed a delicate side to his game with the clever cross-kick that resulted in a try for Louis Rees-Zammit.

"The move was called before," said Morgan,

"It was supposed to go to Biggar but it came to me instead. I just went for it and quite glad it came off."

Forwards coach Jonathan Humphreys added: "Jac used to kick for his local rugby team.

"He stopped actually kicking for them at 17, so it is something that he has in his armoury.

"Martyn Williams (Wales team manager) also liked to get the odd or kick or two. You see him with the physical stuff, but he is a very skilful boy."

  17. Biggar inspires Walespublished at 09:28 British Summer Time 11 September 2023

Scrum V: 2023 Rugby World Cup

Dan Biggar gave a man of the match performance, kicking 12 points before leaving the field carrying a small injury.

Warren Gatland said it was an emotional occasion for the fly-half.

"I think it was his mother's birthday today, so it was pretty emotional for him," said Gatland.

"He'd say that he hoped she was looking down on him and maybe that's the case."

Biggar left the field at half-time fuming with his team-mates for not kicking the ball off the field earlier.

"I didn't have a problem with it. It's about making people accountable," Gatland said.

"There's nothing wrong with players in terms of challenging each other.

"Those sort of criticism aren't personal. We talk about it being a point of care.

"It's about the team getting better and individuals getting better because we need to be comfortable with being critical."

There was so much going on, so much to look at, it was an open game and I think Fiji can feel aggrieved but don't take away from a fantastic game.
