  1. Carley got 'the big decisions right'published at 09:23 British Summer Time 11 September 2023

Wales gave penalties away in their 22 but they weren't for the same infringement so I think referee Matt Carley did the right thing in not giving a yellow card.

The Fiji yellow card was when Wales looked like they were scoring and Fiji collapsed a maul.

I don't think Carley had a terrible game, he got most of the decisions right, the big decisions he got right.

If the games that good, the referee has had a pretty good game.

Fiji could have won the game but I don't think Wales stole a victory.

Wales did one or two things slightly better, Fiji did so much good in the game but you have to finish those opportunities off.

They lacked composure, all the stats in their favour but Wales were clinical and those were the key moments.

  4. 'Everyone wrote the boys off'published at 09:17 British Summer Time 11 September 2023

Everyone spoke about writing the boys off, it didn't start the way everyone wanted it to, but building that scoreboard was massive.

We had the points on the board and that's where Fiji struggled.

It was like the game against Fiji four years ago, back then Wales were 10-0 down, this time they scored first.

Fiji looked unstoppable. Almost every time they had the ball they crossed the gain line, we were struggling.

I thought Wales were going to lose by 30!

We are all still buzzing it was an incredible game, it was the perfect start for Wales, everything was going right and then Fiji just exploded.

The main defensive moment came from the bone-crunching tackle from Josh Adams on opposite number Selestino Ravutaumada.

He stopped the Fiji wing and in turn lifted, his team, the stadium and the nation.

"It was certainly a massive moment," said Humphreys.

"There were huge moments everywhere in terms of the amount of tackles the boys made, how physical it was, how much they got up and moved.

"That certainly energised everyone off the back of it. It was a huge hit, and a massive moment for us.

"The stadium felt that, and it certainly lifted us as a group."

Wales made a World Cup record of 248 tackles as they fought against a ferocious onslaught.

"Mike Forshaw (Wales defence coach) is extremely proud of the boys. It's also the conditioning element," said forwards coach Jonathan Humphreys.

"You can't make that many tackles if you are not fit and have the ability to get up and go again. The mindset and fitness was excellent."

Lock Will Rowlands made 27 tackles.

"He was excellent, we've missed him," said Humphreys

"He dislocated his shoulder in the autumn.

"He is an exceptional athlete. It is very rare you get such a big man who is such an athlete with such a big engine.

"He has turned into a very important player for us. He came to rugby late, so he doesn't have a huge amount of rugby.

"He was early 20s when he started playing rugby. He is brilliant around the group."

  10. Gatland 'delighted'published at 08:59 British Summer Time 11 September 2023

Scrum V: 2023 Rugby World Cup

Warren Gatland admitted to some pre-match nerves in the build up to the Fiji game, and there was no one more relieved come the final whistle.

He said he almost considered wandering down to the changing rooms and waiting for the final whistle as Fiji mounted their near comeback.

Speaking to the press afterwards, Gatland said he was "delighted with the result".

"I thought there were lots of positives".

But he also said his side made some "dumb decisions" which allowed Fiji back into the game.

Scrum V: 2023 Rugby World Cup

Forwards coach Jonathan Humphreys has been facing the media this morning.

"You don't sleep too much after a game like that," said Humphreys.

"That game was massive for us. I don't think many people had probably given us a shot at that game, but we had a belief.

"We had worked extremely hard. We knew to an extent what Fiji were going to bring, but it is still so hard to stop them.

"Their footwork is so late and so good, so we knew it was going to be an unbelievably tough game.

"But to get through it with a bonus-point is massive for us."

Scrum V: 2023 Rugby World Cup

There will be a few sore heads in Bordeaux this morning.

Wales fans celebrated long into the night as their side clinched a thrilling encounter against Fiji to kick start their Rugby World Cup.

Wales had led with tries from Josh Adams, George North, Louis-Rees-Zammit and Elliot Dee, but a late surge saw Fiji almost snatch victory at the death.

What could have been if Semi Radradra had taken that final pass.
