Stephen Ferris believes that while a 'Super League' between Premiership and United Rugby Championship clubs would be "interesting", there are a lot of obstacles to overcome before it can become a reality.

Earlier this week, Rugby Football Union (RFU) chief executive Bill Sweeney said the union will take part in talks regarding a combined competition.

It is understood the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) are also open to the idea, but Ferris says he can't see it happening any time soon.

"I don't believe it's going to happen in the next couple of years," the former Ireland, Ulster and Lions back row told BBC Sport NI.

"Maybe after the next Rugby World Cup cycle, we've got a World Cup final this weekend."

He added: "It's an interesting one. I suppose five or six years ago, everyone was just talking about the Gallagher Premiership and how great a league it was. It almost felt like the English looked down on us with this mediocre Pro 14, but now all of a sudden it's this global URC with the addition of the South African teams.

"I know they came in in 2017 but with the likes of the Stormers, Bulls and Sharks coming on board, the competition now is just so competitive and now all of a sudden the English clubs feel like they want a taste of it."

Halloween is just around the corner, and there was an eerie silence as de Klerk ghosted over in the corner with the final play, undoing a lot of Ulster's hard work in the half.

At least Goosen missed the second conversion, allowing the hosts to maintain a narrow advantage, but Dan McFarland is unlikely to be overly happy with how the final five minutes played out.

  10. Half-time - a missed conversion separates the teamspublished at 17:50 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

    Ulster 14-12 Bulls

Ulster go in at the break with a narrow lead after a strong first-half, but Bulls have found a way back into this game with their physicality in attack and have taken their chances well.

It has been back-and-forth action, played at a fast pace and it will be interesting to see which way the momentum swings in the second-half with the game on a knife-edge.

A big second-half coming up in Belfast!

  11. try

    Try - Ulster 14-12published at 17:49 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

    Sebastian De Klerk

    The Bulls hit back!

Multiple phases drew in the Ulster defence and the Bulls went wide to create a mis-match, with winger Sebastian De Klerk applying a relatively easy finish after some incisive Bulls attack.

Johan Goosen goes wide with the conversion, but the Bulls are well and truly back in this contest after a first half largely dominated by the home side.

  12. converted try

Converted try - Ulster 14-7 Bullspublished at 17:44 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

    Gerhard Steenekamp

Bulls capitalise on their spell of possession in Ulster's 22.

A series of strong carries ultimately leads to prop Gerhard Steenekamp powering his way over the Ulster line from short-distance.

Johan Goosen is accurate from the kicking tee to keep his side within touching distance.

Ulster are restored to 15 men as we approach half-time.

  13. Ulster in control after strong startpublished at 17:42 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

    Ulster 14-0 Bulls

Ulster have enjoyed the majority of territory and possession in the first half hour.

Bulls discipline is making life difficult for themselves, conceding six penalties so far.

Despite being a man down due to Will Addison's yellow card, Ulster have had the momentum but Bulls are now fighting back with a number of phases deep into Ulster's half.

Well, I knew that would jinx tings (in a good way)! What a finish in the corner!

Stockdale had said about trying to prove Andy Farrell wrong. That's not a bad way to go about it.

The conversion by Nathan Doak wasn't bad either.

  15. converted try

Converted trypublished at 17:34 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

    Jacob Stockdale

Ulster have all the momentum and once again use the lineout maul to set up their attack.

The ball goes through a couple of phases before going back to Jacob Stockdale in the corner who still has a lot to do, but applies a great diving finish for Ulster's second try of the game.

Nathan Doak nails the difficult conversion from the corner.

  16. Ulster pressure relievedpublished at 17:32 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

    Ulster 7-0 Bulls

The Bulls cough up promising field position with a misfiring lineout.

Nick Timoney makes a break, charging forward for 40 metres, but the ball goes loose in midfield and Ulster will be ruing a missed chance to score against the run of play.

The win a penalty, however, and Billy Burns makes good ground as Ulster set-up for another lineout.

There are some fireworks going off in the distance beyond the stadium.

We're yet to see things really spark on the pitch, despite Ulster's lead.

  18. Yellow card for Addisonpublished at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

    Will Addison

Will Addison is shown a yellow card for what is deemed to be a cynical infringement - a tackle in an offside position as Bulls were applying pressure in the Ulster 22.

Bulls will look to take advantage of their extra man as they go to the corner...

  19. Bulls absorbing waves of Ulster attackpublished at 17:27 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

    Ulster 7-0 Bulls

A clever lineout move goes to the front and goes to back to Tom Stewart who rampages forward but is stopped close to the line.

Ulster go through the phases but ultimately cough the ball up and it is kicked by Bulls deep into Ulster's backfield.

  20. Ulster playing with ambitionpublished at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

    Ulster 7-0 Bulls

Ulster are clearly trying to play an expansive game but have lacked accuracy at times, with a couple of errors when trying to get the ball through hands.

The set-piece is proving an effective platform as Ulster win a scrum penalty and kick into the Bulls 22.
