Bobby Murdoch instigates yet another Celtic attack, moving the ball from deep to Jimmy Johnstone, who cuts in from the right and, with seven Inter players in the box, blazes a hopeful shot high over.

A dead ringer for Sean Connery in the newly released James Bond film You Only Live Twice, Bertie Auld is just gliding with the ball at his feet. The Celtic midfielder gathers possession in the centre circle then progresses to near the edge of the box before firing a rising shot over the top.

Tommy Gemmell is hurt and missing from his usual left-back spot as Inter make a rare venture up the park. John Clark mops up the danger and there is Gemmell deep in the opposition half, looking suddenly refreshed. He saunters in from the touchline and decides to have a go from distance, with his shot skidding past the near post.

Inter are defending deep, with almost every player behind the ball. Celtic are coming at them in waves and this time it's Stevie Chalmers who cuts inside his man and lets fly with a shot from 25 yards that whistles just wide of the top corner.

Jimmy Johnstone and Bobby Lennox combine well down the left to force a corner. Johnstone swings the ball into the near post and it's flicked on in the direction of Willie Wallace, who can only nod wide from six yards. The ball was just a bit behind him, which made it difficult.

Bobby Murdoch picks out Bobby Lennox with a lovely long pass. The winger doesn't quite bring it under control but the balls rolls invitingly into the path of Willie Wallace, who thunders in a powerful strike from 22 yards. Straight at Giuliano Sarti though.

So close for Celtic! John Clark has a shot charged down and the ball is collected by Bertie Auld, who drives into the penalty area and clips a rising, angled shot with his left foot against the crossbar. Goalkeeper Giuliano Sarti was beaten all ends up.

Jimmy Johnstone is given offside as he forces a close-range save from Giuliano Sarti. The Inter keeper is no hurry to take the free kick.

Oh dear... That was not in the script. Sandro Mazzola splits the Celtic defence with a perfectly weighted pass for Renato Cappellini to run on to. Jim Craig comes haring over from right-back to cover and clips the striker.

John Clark is giving referee Kurst Tschenscher an earful but the West German isn't going to change his mind.

Here come Celtic again, with Bobby Lennox popping up on the right flank and tearing past a couple of opponents to cut the ball back from the byline. Jimmy Johnstone is all alone near the penalty spot and his looping header is acrobatically tipped over by Giuliano Sarti.

An excellent response from Celtic as Jimmy Johnstone drifts into the penalty box from the right and bamboozles a couple of defenders with a trademark twist to power in a low strike that Giuliano Sarti gets down to save at full-stretch.

Renato Cappellini skips past Jim Craig and cuts a cross back for Sandro Mazzola, who gets a sharp, downward header on target but Ronnie Simpson keeps it out with his knees as he dives to protect the near post.

An early warning for Celtic.

A very soft free kick goes the way of the Italians on the right side of the Celtic penalty area. Sandro Mazzola gently lobs the delivery into a central area and there is Ronnie Simpson out to clutch it. Solid handling from the veteran keeper.

Celtic get the ball into the feet of Jimmy Johnstone again. Tarcisio Burgnich is right on top of him and it looks like he has orders to shadow Jinky everywhere he goes.

It could be a long day for the Inter full-back...

An early touch for Jimmy Johnstone as the Celtic winger scurries forward but his low cross is calmly intercepted by Inter skipper Armando Picchi.

"Fortunately, the temperature has dropped after a very warm afternoon," match commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme informs us.

The captains Armando Picchi and Billy McNeill pose for a quick photo with the match officials before Inter Milan kick off the 12th European Cup final.

Inter Milan have been champions of Europe for two of the last three years. Can these men, all Italian, add the 1967 trophy to the European Cups won in 1964 and '65?

They look ready for action at Lisbon's Estadio Nacional.
