Mark Allen will be wondering who he has offended to deserve this luck. A monster red to get going, but then one that is afraid of heights and refuses to drop. Gravity defying.

    O’Sullivan 5-2 Allen

Ooohs when Ronnie O'Sullivan misses. Mark Allen inspects, looking for inspiration, but the required snookers aren't there. If O'Sullivan wins the next one, are we as good as done before we even get to the evening?

    O’Sullivan 4-2 Allen: 7th frame: 49-12

This is surely 5-2? Mark Allen is forced to take on a rapid pink to the right centre, only to see it ricochet off the near jaw. O'Sullivan is left with a simple clean-up job.

    O’Sullivan 4-2 Allen: 7th frame: 49-11

Two misses. A warning from the referee. Coughing in the auditorium gets a little more nervous.

    O’Sullivan 4-2 Allen: 7th frame: 49-4

O'Sullivan is sawn off at 49, but Allen is still left with the prospect of error-free safety. When he forces O'Sullivan to come off two cushions to kiss the group of reds at the bottom of the table, the Rocket is called for a miss.

Mark Allen was doing very well in the last frame then all of a sudden he missed a black off the spot when he was going into the pack. That's pretty debilitating from his perspective for the rest of this session.

If he feels like he is losing touch with Ronnie O'Sullivan, they are worrying signs. You don't want to feel like that because he's the greatest front runner there has ever been.

    O’Sullivan 4-2 Allen: 7th frame: 43-0

Tough pink to left centre, or blue off its spot to top left? Blue sunk, a journey so long to be almost intercontinental. Lots of reds still to be manufactured, though. O'Sullivan is having to engineer, rather than stroll, this break.

  10. Postpublished at 15:14 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2018

    O’Sullivan 4-2 Allen: 7th frame: 24-0

The soft sound of O'Sullivan's shoes sliding across the carpet is audible as he stares at a hole in the table. From the front row, a chap in a red sweater has to lean to peer around the Rocket's right shoulder. Muffled coughs come from on high. The blue is homed on the pink spot. O'Sullivan shakes his head. Does he think this is a chance for 5-2?

Seven-time world champion on BBC Two

Sometimes when you're the favourite, as Ronnie is, you can sense a time in the match.

When I used to play two session matches I used to try and break the back of it and win the final almost in the first session if you can if you get a big enough lead.

Polite applause as Ronnie O'Sullivan goes 4-2 up. The Rocket lays his cue on the table and heads for the locker rooms. Mark Allen strokes his face and considers his future. The next one is a biggie. You'd think three frames is too many to be giving away to the greatest...

    O’Sullivan 3-2 Allen: 6th frame: 22-11

There really is nowhere for Mark Allen to hide. Cue ball top left, red near the blue spot, intended target is bottom right.

You can guess what O'Sullivan did next.

    O’Sullivan 3-2 Allen: 6th frame: 19-11

O'Sullivan has taken more than 90 seconds to have a look at this black at the bottom left corner. That's an eternity in his world.

The black goes in, but the cue ball's trip in and out of balk doesn't end up in a pottable red.

    Ronnie O'Sullivan

Allen, apology of a beard around his chops, looks at the ground when a catch of the jaw leaves a chance for O'Sullivan. Ronnie, though, can't take it when leaning on the rest. He'll get another chance. This could be the sniff of 4-2...

Still tight. Points at a premium. This is big for Allen, the man currently at the table. The difference between being level with the Rocket or two behind could go a long way to deciding the destiny of the title.

Quite an empty press room for the final this year, considering how full it was on Friday for Barry Hearn's news conference.

O'Sullivan's done his talking on and off the table in this tournament, particularly with chat about wanting to form a breakaway tour.

I'm available if he needs players.

Tactical. Allen knocked in a long red but couldn't get on a colour. The black is being man-marked by a red on the cushion, the pink is surrounded and the rest are halfway or past. Safety battle.

He doesn't like have having his arm twisted being in all the events. The one player in the game that appears to be able to pick and choose and still guaranteed to be in the top 16 is Ronnie O'Sullivan.
