    Frame 10: Higgins 5-4 Yan

That was a bad one to lose for Higgins. But can he bounce back here? Yan's tempted by a long red but sees his attempt rattle the jaws and roll along beneath the black spot.

This is a tough cut for Higgins but in it drops.

A couple of more loose reds are available but he's going to have to smash into the pack at some stage. That'll be the defining shot.

John Higgins is experienced enough but it is gone. It was a body blow but he has just got to get on with it.

    Frame 10: Higgins 5-4 Yan

    Steve Davis
Six-time world champion on BBC Two

One of the best frames of snooker you have ever seen, worthy of the competition so far.

His safety on the re-spotted black was superb - that is nerves of steel, staring 6-3 in face, you see what sort of character he is.

Yan was not playing well enough to beat John Higgins and it was looking like 63 but he missed the black and no-one would have thought Yan could win the frame from there.

    Frame 10: Higgins 5-4 Yan

    John Parrott
1991 world champion on BBC Two

John Higgins played a virtually flawless frame of snooker. He was pushing reds up the table when he was 67 ahead and he played a black to get round. It was brilliant composure. The biter has just been bitten.

  5. Yan wins on re-spotted blackpublished at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2021

    Frame Nine: Higgins 5-3 Yan

Is this a chance? Higgins plays and up and down and the black bounces up off the cushion. This is a chance.

Up steps Yan and rolls it in. Sensational. If there was a crowd tonight, they'd be going wild.

Percentage stuff so far. Everything being played with a very straight bat.

Both players turn down double opportunities.

I use the word 'opportunities' very loosely.

What a frame of snooker and what a fightback from Yan Bingtao.

    Frame Nine: Higgins 5-3 Yan

Oh my. Yan's left himself with a long pink down the rail to keep his break going.

    He sinks it. Wow.

He's got a straight black off the cushion into the far left corner to take this to a re-spotted black. It's in. What drama.

    Frame Nine: Higgins 5-3 Yan

Yan's pulling shots/pots out of nowhere here.

A brilliant cut on the black and a long red are just sublime but if he clears up he can only score 67. Could we be on for a re-spotted black? It's looking that way.

    Frame Nine: Higgins 5-3 Yan

A tap on the table from Higgins who appreciates that safety shot from Yan. He's still got a longish shot to nothing on mind.

Can he knock this in? No. Now Yan's up and at it and can see a pot into the bottom left corner. In it pops.

He can't knock in a red along the cushion a couple of balls down the line but is given another chance by a Higgins miss to the left centre. Deja vu from this afternoon..

It's amazing even with all his experience. Frame ball is always the toughest to knock in. He is a strong favourite though.

Commentator's curse. Higgins misses a black off its spot which also happens to be frame ball.

He's got a healthy lead of 67 and is safe but he is not over the line yet as he looks to open up a three-frame lead..

    Frame Nine: Higgins 5-3 Yan

This is good stuff from Higgins. He's in good position and up to 52 points. Not even looked like missing yet.

Concentration is etched right across his face.

John Higgins now has the balls where he wants them. He made one or two errors in the balls earlier. It was something he didn't do against Ronnie O'Sullivan, he never looked like missing in that quarter-final match.

Lovely pot. Higgins manages to get up for the ball and then play round the angles to get himself out of a difficult position.

    Frame Nine: Higgins 5-3 Yan

Great shot. Higgins has Yan in behind the brown and yellow which earns him his first opportunity this evening.

What can the four-time world champion do from here? He's right in the balls but this is going to take some working out to get decent position.

If Yan were to come back here he would become the youngest Masters champion since Ronnie O’Sullivan in 2007.

He is already the youngest finalist since his compatriot Ding Junhui, who was runner-up to O’Sullivan that year. And a win would also see him become only the second Asian winner of a Triple Crown event after Ding.

It’s been a dreamy stuff so far this tournament for Yan, who claimed his maiden ranking title at the 2019 Riga Masters.

    Frame Nine: Higgins 5-3 Yan

Quite a tense, nervy start this evening.

Yan had a look at a long pot to the bottom right that wobbled in the jaws and ran safe.

Since then it's been bread-and-butter safety.
