"The venue, which opened by the River Clyde in September 2013 with a concert by Scotland's own Rod Stewart, looks stunning ahead of the big night.

"Sports Personality executive editor Carl Doran says: "We've wanted to come to Scotland for a while, and months of planning have gone in to creating what will hopefully be a great show. We've got an incredible line-up of sports stars, some amazing live performances, inspirational moments, surprises, and an exciting race to see who will be Sports Personality of the Year.'"

BBC presenter Hazel Irvine is posing for photographs on the red carpet, rugby union great Gavin Hastings is chatting to reporters and gymnast Dan Keatings has also arrived - and what a bow tie he's sporting. An eye-catching maroon bow tie, it's a big one, and a light grey suit, an outfit Pee-wee Herman would be proud of.

"It's always nice to come back here," says Keatings, who won pommel horse gold at the Commonwealth Games. "The memories mean everything, it was definitely one of my best results. It was such a buzz around the Games."

"It's been quite a 14 months for the SSE Hydro, with Rod Stewart providing the venue's first gig back in September 2013, and Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus also dropping by since. The netball and gymnastic events from this year's Commonwealth Games were held here while One Direction are booked for next year.

"But for tonight, the venue will play host to the county's best sports stars. The rehearsals are almost done, the trophies perfectly polished and as you can see, the red carpet is looking resplendent. Let's do this."

Smell that? Breathe in. Take a deep breath. Because it's a rare odour, a peculiar combination, a concoction that's only available once a year; a winning whiff that isn't on sale on Black Friday, or any other Friday. Flare the nostrils, take it in, it's eau de sporting showbiz - a scent which is only available one Sunday in December. Gallons of perfume, aftershave and hairspray, mixed with the rich smell of success. Lovely.
