"It was on of those things we've been working together with Benke for three years, put it altogether and it all came together that night.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

A horror end to 2016 convinced Alastair Cook to step down as England captain and he was replaced by Joe Root, but results do not look to have altered.

England remain strong at home – there were Test series wins against South Africa and West Indies, even if the Windies pulled off a stunning victory at Headingley.

But the Ashes are set to be surrendered and England are battling against a second successive whitewash, all against the backdrop of the Ben Stokes controversy.

In 50-over cricket, England are still looking for their first global trophy after fluffing their lines in the Champions Trophy semi-finals. Pakistan's triumph was a feel-good story.

Essex won the County Championship and Nottinghamshire reigned in white-ball cricket, but expect the domestic game to come under scrutiny in the aftermath of the likely Ashes defeat.
