For once it is Murray doing the running as Robert dictates the opening point of the tie-break, before coming out on top in an exchange of cheeky drop shots to lead 2-0. A dreadful forehand from Murray flies wide as Robert leads 3-0, but Murray responds with two points to reduce the arrears, before a shot low at his feet flies out. Robert leads 4-2 at the changeover.

Robert horribly miscues a straightforward smash in the game's first point and never really recovers, as Murray toys with him at 30-0, sending him to all corners before pouncing to claim three game points. Robert produces a stunning winner to delay the inevitable, but Murray takes the next one to seal the game. Tie-break.

"Andy's sort of stuck in the mud. He has the ability to serve a lot harder but perhaps he likes to move the ball around court and keep his opponent running when a bit of raw power would get the job done."

Robert is on the charge. Well, in as much as you can charge when you're two sets and a break down. With that break retrieved, he moves to 40-0 and, despite allowing Murray a couple of points, he wins the game with a deft drop shot to take the lead in the set.

"Murray had two match points and he's really allowed Robert into this. A couple of short serves... He could have closed it out at 5-3. We're still pretty sure he's going to come through it. We talked earlier about the top players sending messages to each other and this is not the message he wants the other guys to be seeing."

Hang on a minute, this wasn't in the script. Robert wins a tense rally to force a break point as Murray is sent scampering from right to left and back again. Murray denies him, but the Frenchman sticks at it doggedly, refusing to cave as he forces a series of deuces. He then earns another break point, this time making no mistake. Game on?

  7. Postpublished at 08:04 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2014

A bullet of a forehand at 15-30 takes Murray to within two points of victory, but he nets from a tight angle to give Robert game point. He cannot take it, though, as he is denied by an arrowing Murray backhand down the line.

Robert does cling on, however, and Murray will now serve for the match.

Wild cheers on Rod Laver Arena as the crowd think Nadal has set up three match points with an ace down the 'T', but Nishikori successfully challenges and the 16th seed lives on. It's only a temporary reprieve, though, as he drags a forehand wide and now it is three set points to Nadal. Nishikori nets and Nadal marches on. A 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 7-6 (7-3) victory for the top seed.

"Murray seems to be playing one aggressive point followed by one passive point. He's trying to get the job done. He's just not quite finding the rhythm he had earlier in the match and his opponent now seems to be enjoying being out there."

Robert, don't forget, has never made it this far in a Grand Slam before and he's not going to go down without a fight. He's playing his shots and is determined to attack when possible, with one such move towards the net helping him to 30-30. Both men fire wide to take it to deuce, before an onrushing Murray attempts a disguised drop shot which only finds the net to give Robert a break point.

Even then, though, you sense Murray is in control, and he sweeps a cross-court forehand beyond Robert before the Frenchman nets as the Scot moves to within one game of the quarter-finals.

The pressure is on Kei Nishikori as he serves to stay in the match and the 16th seed forces the third set into a tie-break with a gutsy display. But Nadal quickly gathers a mini-break to go 2-0 up.

  12. Murray breakspublished at 07:53 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2014

For the first time in the set - perhaps sensing the kill - Murray exerts some pressure on the Robert serve. The Frenchman sends a forehand long to give his opponent two break points. He misses both, however, first sending a forehand wide and then being denied as an onrushing Robert volleys clinically at the net.

Murray then gets a third chance - followed by a fourth, fifth and sixth - but wastes them all and screams at himself in frustration.

Then, at last, he takes his opportunity, sauntering forward to meet a tame second serve and cracking a forehand beyond the motionless Robert.

Nishikori misses a simple forehand, gifting Nadal a break point. The 16th seed lacking the belief needed to see off the world number one and he falls to his knees as he watches his backhand dribble towards the net. It's level at 5-5 in the third set, with Nadal two sets to the good.

  14. Postpublished at 07:44 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2014

Whether it's because Murray is still working his way back to full fitness or because Robert has stepped up a level, there is certainly less of a chasm between the players in this set.

Robert wastes an opportunity at 15-15 when he somehow overhits a volley at the net, but he then sends Murray scurrying backwards with a lob which the Scot can only pat back into play. The unforced errors are hampering Robert, though, and he nets from deep to allow Murray to hold.

"I think we've seen some amazing fighting qualities from Nishikori. It's all credit to him. He's red lining on his shots from the baseline, putting every effort he possibly can to put pace on his forehand."

It's not going to plan for Nadal on Rod Laver. First, he's warned for time violation and then he's broken by Nishikori who now, leading 5-4 in the third set, is serving for the set.

  17. Postpublished at 07:37 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2014

Robert isn't being troubled much at all on his serve at the moment. After losing a string of service games in succession earlier in the match, he now looks far more comfortable and, at 40-0 booms down a wide-ish serve which Murray can't return.

  18. Postpublished at 07:35 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2014

After Robert dares to take the opening point, Murray responds with a thumping ace down the middle as he moves 30-15 ahead. He edges to within a point of the game with a forehand approach which sends Robert scampering to the corner, allowing Murray to saunter to the net and secure the point.

But still the Scot is made to work, finally taking the game after a deuce when an on-the-run Robert sends a forehand wide.

For the third time in a row Nishikori has two break points on the Nadal serve and, this time, the Spaniard is unable to recover. He throws in a double fault to give the 16th seed the chance of levelling in the third set.

The crowd are on their feet and Murray is cursing himself, but that's a moment of quality from Robert which you simply have to admire. The Frenchman, from deep, produces an inch-perfect lob which the back-peddaling Murray can't chase down. Murray then nets as his opponent moves to 40-0 for the second service game in a row and, while the Scot does claim the next point, Robert holds easily enough.

Is he starting to get a foothold in the game at last?
