Brollies pop up around Philippe Chatrier just as Jeremy Chardy is serving to stay in the match. He negotiates the raindrops and Novak Djokovic's feisty returning, but the match is almost done and dusted. Second seed Djokovic is about to serve for the match.

Serena Williams has said her second-round defeat by Garbine Muguruza has made her determined to work "five times as hard".

"I think she played really well and she played really smart," said the 2002 and 2013 champion.

"You know, it's great, because I'm going to go home and work five times as hard to make sure I never lose again. Obviously I'm super disappointed. I know for a fact I can play so much better than what I did today, so it's a double edged sword. I didn't play well, but I can play better."

The statistics following Serena Williams's surprise exit are continuing to filter through. This is also the first time in the Open era that both the women's number one and number two seeds have fallen before the third round at any Grand Slam.

Some food for thought. The last time both Serena and Venus Williams lost on the same day at a Grand Slam event was at Wimbledon in 2011 (it was on the second Monday and Marion Bartoli beat Serena while Tsvetana Pironkova defeated Venus).

The two sisters were also defeated on the same day back in 2008 at Roland Garros, with Serena falling to Katarina Srebotnik in the third round and Flavia Pennetta getting the better of Venus.

Serena Williams's unexpected demise means Roger Federer is on Suzanne Lenglen against Diego Sebastian Schwartzman.

The next bit sounds like make-believe but the fourth seed has been broken by the Argentine, who leads 2-1 in the first set.

Five double faults dribbled from Serena Williams's fickle racquet during her defeat by Garbine Muguruza. The fallen champion also made 29 unforced errors and won just 27% of points on her second serve. Uncomfortable bedtime reading for Serena.

Her opponent, on the other hand, made just 18 unforced errors and her serving percentages were in the low to mid 60s. Solid rather than spectacular.

Novak Djokovic is doing his best to ensure he isn't going to be tapped on the shoulder by the Roland Garros Grim Reaper. The second seed leading 6-1 6-4 against Jeremy Chardy.

But sixth seed Tomas Berdych is making a meal of things on Court One. The Czech lost the first-set tie-break 7-6 (7-4) to Aleksandr Nedovyesov but has taken a 3-1 lead in the second set.

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

"Jaws are being picked up off the floor all around Roland Garros after the sudden and unexpected demise of defending champion Serena Williams. The 17-time Grand Slam champion will head to Wimbledon without a major title in 2014 after her shock defeat by Garbine Muguruza.

"The American made 29 errors and just eight winners in her 63 minutes on court, a dreadful day for the world number one, and we will hear her thoughts very shortly. Let's not ignore just how impressively Muguruza served out the biggest win of her life though."

The women's top seed? Gone. The second seed? Yesterday's news. There must be a cold wind blowing from the east. The women's draw has opened up nicely for those who were labelled also-rans and dark horses at the beginning of this tournament, but who is now the favourite?

"I am so happeeeeeeeee," says Garbine Muguruza after causing the biggest shock of the tournament. Serena Williams smiles at her conqueror and shakes her hand at the net. Serena's mum, too, gives the underdog a thumbs up from the sidelines, a sweet sporting gesture.

Williams points to the clay, as if the surface is to blame for her botching a forehand. Garbine Muguruza is two points away from victory. A booming first serve down the line - cheers from the spectators - and the Spaniard edging ever closer to victory.

Has Williams got any fight left? Muguruza aims a first serve into her opponent's ribcage and Williams's feet are stuck in the clay. Game over. The unlikeliest of victories - a straight sets 6-2 6-2 win for the Spaniard against the top seed and defending champion.

Serena Williams shows no emotion as she strides purposefully back towards her chair for the changeover having held far more comfortably than in previous games. Garbine Muguruza serving for the match. The defending champion could be toast.

Serena getting more joy on her opponent's serve than her own and she nicks three points easily with a series of hard-hitting returns. Three break back points for the reigning champion, but Garbine Muguruza targets the top seed's backhand and is eventually rewarded. One break point saved, and another... nerveless stuff from the 20-year-old who calmly forces the game to deuce.

Williams slaps a return into the tape. A catalogue of errors from the American. And another faulty return and Williams trailing 6-2 5-1.

Two double faults from Serena Williams presents her opponent with three break points and Serena looks distressed. She screws a forehand wide and trudges back to her chair, shaking her head, having been broken to love. Garbine Muguruza leads 4-1.

Serena Williams has suffered against the underdog at Roland Garros before, losing to Virginie Razzano in the first round in 2012, and while the top seed was far from her best in the first round against France's Alize Lim, no-one expected this.

The American fighting back, breaking back against Garbine Muguruza and now trails 3-1. A double fault from Williams on her serve, though, suggests she will have to dig deep if she is to come back from the brink.
