"There are all sorts going on here. That was a very useful and much needed net cord winner for Andy Murray when he was 15-30 down in that last service game."

Philipp Kohlschrieber with a disguised forehand drop-shot that is so naughty it would probably be seized by Customs and Excise if he tried to take it to Wimbledon later this summer.

That gives him 15-30. Andy Murray gets a slice of luck just when he needs it, the ball plopping over to Kohlschreiber territory via a hefty net cord.

To deuce we go. Murray is right in the dangerzone here, but a coolly dispatched forehand, in contrast to Kohlschreiber's snatched backhand into the net, gets him safely back to his courtside base.

Justin Hames:, external Murray will always just be a good, not a great tennis player.

Toby Foot:, external Some of the shots Murray is pulling out the bag are phenomenal.

Philipp Kohlschreiber might be getting the overhead yips. The German clumps a smash long on the opening point.

Murray moonballs him again on the next and, although it is a winner, there is something not too convincing about the way Kohlschreiber pounds the ball into the red dirt to make sure.

Murray magics up a winning pass from way out wide - the best shot of the day so far - and it draws a rueful smile from his opponent.

Kohlschreiber re-sets his sights though and blasts his way to safety.

"We can't accuse either player of being tentative right now. There was was spellbindingly good tennis from Andy Murray in that last game even if he was break point down."

Peter Vaz:, external Bit of a thriller in the deciding set unfolding here...

Rich:, external As much as I want a Murray win, have to say how impressed I am by Kohlschreiber's tenacity and resilience. Still looking 50/50.

Philipp Kohlschreiber gets a forehand to spit right up onto Andy Murray's toes. Perfect length, a real baseline yorker, and that takes him to 15-15.

Murray isn't waiting to check the depth of floaty defensive backhand on the next point, advancing to drive away a stinging volley. Thirty-fifteen.

A miscue on the forehand though and the Scot is looking at 30-30. Any butterflies lurking are emerging from their cocoons. Kohlschreiber rifles away a forehand for 30-40 and a break point, but Murray summons up an exocet ace to see it off.

Just what the doctor ordered. And there is more on the prescription. A fine forehand sees him through from deuce.

Murray is actually playing pretty well, not too far off top gear. The trouble is Kohlscreiber is ticking over pretty nicely too.

"Philipp Kohlschreiber is being very aggressive and not holding back, even on match point down."

Andy Murray was chowing down on Philipp Kohlschreiber's second serve yesterday and he gets after it again to move to 30-30. Kohlschreiber has been pretty accurate with his first serve though and a second ace of the game takes him to 40-30.

He isn't out of the woods yet though. Murray advances to deuce and flicks away the pass for a match point.

Kohlschreiber under another nerve-testing overhead.... he nails it! Match point saved.

The German keeps hitting out and bullies Murray out of the remainder of the game.

First two points head Andy Murray's way, but the third should be all Philipp Kohlschrieber's.

A hanging ball is right in his smash zone, but the German shanks his attempted overhead over the back.

Forty-love for Murray. Kohlschreiber worms his way back into the game at 40-30, but Murray squashes his challenge with a concussive ace.

  12. Analysispublished at 12:37 British Summer Time 1 June 2014

    Dominic Inglot
British doubles player on BBC Radio 5

"I have to say I am very impressed with Philipp Kohlschreiber as he is dealing very well with the pressure.

"As both players have won their first service games, any chance of catching their rival cold has now gone and it is now about quality hitting."

  13. Postpublished at 12:37 British Summer Time 1 June 2014

Philipp Kohlschreiber is right on the cliff-edge. If he concedes a break then he is toast. A forehand into the net on the opening point is enough to get the nerves rattling.

Back and forth they swat in the next rally. Back and forth, back and forth. 0-30 would be very ugly for Kohlschreiber. The shot counter clicks upwards. Twenty, thirty strokes. It is up around there and finally Murray folds out, punting wide.

Having seen out that sticky situation, Kohlschreiber nurses his serve through without suffering any more damage.

He spins the barrel and shoves the revolver back across the table to Murray.

    Dominic Inglot
British doubles player on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"Philipp Kohlschreiber was probably hoping he was going to get a few more second serves to look at in that first game but Andy Murray did really well.

"Now the pressure is on Kohlschreiber."

  15. Postpublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 1 June 2014

Steady as he serves. Andy Murray wallops down a couple of tasty serves to take the game to 40-15. He is landing with his first punch with more regularity than he was managing yesterday evening.

A forehand long gives Philipp Kohlschreiber a glimmer, but Murray presses the net and the German cannot find a way round him.

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

"We have been here before. Murray returning to Court Suzanne Lenglen to face a fifth set shoot-out against a lower-ranked seed, and with an apparently ailing body. Three years ago, the Briton had fought back from two sets down to level his fourth-round tie against Viktor Troicki, and he extended the drama by falling 5-2 down on the resumption.

"He then reeled off five games in a row to clinch victory and went on to record his best effort at Roland Garros by reaching the semi-finals, where he lost to Rafael Nadal. Exactly the same scenario could play out this time, only Murray has to be a little quicker off the mark with the score at 7-7."

Patrick Jack:, external For the general mental wellbeing of the UK please win this quickly, Andy. And stop grabbing your hamstring!

Laura Lambert:, external Berdych v impressive today vs Isner. Murray struggling to see off Kohlschreiber. Difference? Ability to hold serve having broken.

Declan O'Connell:, external The fact that Kohlschreiber couldn't win, whilst Murray was injured, playing badly and on his worst surface, says a lot.

Andy Murray is sporting the white cap that has been a mainstay of his French Open wardrobe this year.

The British number one revealed yesterday that it is partly a ploy to keep his increasingly unruly mop of hair in check.

They have a barber on site for the players at Roland Garros apparently, which got me thinking: all-time great tennis hairdos, what are your picks?

Men's and women's titles both up for grabs.

I'll kick us off with a nice pic of Andre Agassi, looking like a healthy Axel Rose, circa 1991.

Andy Murray has been knocking up on the practice courts this morning. Now it is time to start flaying the fuzz for real.

He is next up on Court Suzanne Lenglen. The balls that they were playing with last night have been brought out of cold storage and we are all set.

We will have 5 live commentary shortly, once they have finished chewing the Carl Froch-George Groves fat.
