As Andy Murray heads for an ice-bath and some meandering questioning from the local media, we are going to head for the hills for the evening.

The final match of the day on Arthur Ashe is Eugenie Bouchard against Sorana Cirstea, while American 15-year-old Cici Bellis is one set all against Zarina Diyas out on Court 17.

You'll be able to get the results of both on our live scores page with more detail in our round-up.

"A first-serve percentage of 66%, a healthy 68% of points won behind his second serve and 36 winners describe a very solid effort from Murray. The gap in class was pretty clear, and Murray was able to get through with an average service speed on 107mph, but it more than did the job."

Andy Murray: "The start was particularly tough we both struggled early on in the first few points, but I think the second set was good with some fun points.

"I love the atmosphere here. You don't see guys dancing up on the screen at Wimbledon for sure."

    No escape this time.

Three match points at 0-40 as Murray hunts down Bachinger's serve like a lion picking off wounded wildebeest.

It only takes the one match point. Bachinger punts long and after the dramas of the first round, Murray will take a less traumatic evening's work.

Andy Murray will have another haul at the Matthias Bachinger serve with a place in the third round the carrot.

He holds his own serve to move within a game of the last 32.

Andy Murray has a clean shot at Matthias Bachinger as the German's forehand is snared by the tape for 0-40 and three break points.

There is a third character involved in these rallies though as the wind wrecks a bit of havoc on the Murray radar, causing the Scot to mis-measure his groundstrokes.

Bachinger escapes to deuce and sees off another two break points with his serve banging like a souped-up sub-woofer.

Murray miscues a backhand swipe to complete the world 235's escape off the hook and slaps his strings in frustration.

He could have been serving for the match, but there is still work to do.

Andy Murray has a little bit of bother to sort out at 15-30 down on his serve, but he has been quick to stamp out any rebellions from Matthias Bachinger tonight.

As the Scot takes seat for the changeover we get a sight of a background ballboy having a rummage in his shorts pocket. That would ensure a Centre Court ball-gatherer a one-way ticket to car park duties at Wimbledon.

"The news that Andrey Kuznetsov has knocked out Fernando Verdasco comes as a bit of a surprise, although it isn't necessarily good news for probable next opponent Murray. The Scot has had a few battles with Verdasco in his time but has prevailed 10 of 11 times, while Kuznetsov will be a step into the unknown and is a bit of an up-and-comer, having just beaten David Ferrer at Wimbledon."

Matthias Bachinger dents the backboards with a brute of a serve to clinch the game.

The German is averaging 118mph with his first attempts off the oche. Murray, by contrast, is down at 106mph, lacking quite the pop that the 2013 vintage had.

Now then. Matthias Bachinger has the sledgehammer out, a clumping forehand almost yorking Andy Murray on the baseline to bring up three break points.

Murray is backed into a corner here. He doesn't fancy an extra game's work though, never mind an extra set. He rattles though five successive points to turn the tide and whip the carpet from under Bachinger.

The wind is really gusting out there. One Andy Murray lob is almost caught on a thermal and carried to Manhattan.

Matthias Bachinger pats away a backhand volley from up around his shoulders to keep pace on the board.

This third set feels more like the first than the second, with the German keeping pace with Murray in the early stages.

Andy Murray rumbles onwards, with his serve still chugging along nicely.

The wind is still swirling around the Arthur Ashe cauldron, giving the watching Kim Sears' hairdo a bit of a ruffle.

After Andy Murray broke out some of his party pieces at the tail-end of the second set. Matthias Bachinger shows that he has some stylish shots in his own wardrobe.

The German hops into forehand out wide, whipping a top-spinning forehand down the line and in for a winner at 40-30 to the good.

    The crowd enjoyed that one.

The winner of this one will face Andrey Kuznetsov in the next round after the Russian beat Fernando Verdasco 6-3 4-6 4-6 7-5 6-3.

I think you can start pencilling Andy Murray in for that one. The Scot holds to love quicksmart.

You can probably risk breaking out the ball-point on your US Open wallchart to be honest.

  16. Murray wins the second setpublished at 01:26 British Summer Time 29 August 2014

Andy Murray punches away a forehand return down the line for 40-30, punishing a serve that was a little too tame and little too central.

The Scot zig-zags to the net, opening up the angles and finally finding the one he wants to bring up deuce.

Hands as soft as a princess from Murray as he peppers Bachinger's toes with some delicate front-court cross-fire and the second set set is bagged up as the German flops into a unsuccessful forehand and onto the deck.

Looking up at the New York night, Bachinger probably knows that his turn in the tennis spotlight might soon be over.

Andy Murray moves with sniffing distance of the second set with a regulation hold.

Andy Murray gets a little naughty. He goes lob-tastic, sending the ball looping over Matthias Bachinger on four separate occasions as he toys with the German, trying to win style points as much as the game.

All very exhibition, but Bachinger does the business, chasing down the backcourt balls to hold serve and keep his chips on the table in the second set.

"While all is calm on Ashe, with the appearance of legendary crooner Tony Bennett on the big screen causing the most excitement so far, over on Court 17 the home fans are finally seeing their main event of the day. CiCi Bellis, the 15-year-old star of the week, is under way against Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan. It's packed to the rafters but unexpectedly quiet in the opening exchanges as the teenager goes for a bit too much on her groundstrokes and falls 2-0 behind."

Andy Murray whistles through another service game. We have only 47 minutes on the clock so far, and it look like it will continue in similarly swift style with Murray landing 79% of first serves in the second set and converting 10 out of the 11 of the points that followed.

    Healthy stats.
