Matthias Bachinger clenches his fist as he makes his way back to the barley water with his serve intact.

The German is ranked 235th in the world by the way. Victory here would be truly seismic.

A hold to love. Andy Murray watches Matthias Bachinger's backhand bounce tamely wide of the tram.

I think the 2012 champion may have engaged cruise control for the rest of this set.

Matthias Bachinger's serve is spared too much pressure and he makes his mark on the second set.

The word on the New York street is that Rory McIlroy and David Beckham are in the house tonight to watch Murray from the plush seats.

I don't think they will show the level of commitment that these lads have though. They have been there from the first point for starters.

What a fruity little drop-shot from Andy Murray!

Thirty-all and the British number one slices a backhand from the baseline that drops as gentle as a butterfly into the front court and dies instantly in front of Matthias Bachinger.

He does power and well as panache. A whistling ace wraps up the game.

"Here comes the change" says Laura. Maybe she has pinned the point at which the floodgates start to creak.

Andy Murray climbs off his stool and, in contrast with the rather neutered first-set performance, is straining at the leash to attack the Bachinger serve.

The Scot ramps up to 15-40 and two break points. Bachinger saves the first with a missile first serve, but is hustled out of the second as Murray stalks forward, full of intent and menace.

"Six out of 10 for Murray. He has won the set, which is what he wanted. He has played reasonably solid but there's work to do."

    Signed, sealed, delivered.

The first set is gift-wrapped with a thumping, T-splitter of an ace by Andy Murray after winning a nice bit of pitterpat volley in the previous point.

Murray has done enough so far, but it is far from the statement of intent that Novak Djokovic laid down earlier today with a straight-sets rinsing of Paul-Henri Mathieu earlier today.

"The German was overplaying a few shots there. That's one of the few things that's so difficult when you've not played Andy Murray before - getting the balance between defence and aggression."

A party of a point as Andy Murray lobs his German foe and tickles away a drop-volley to chip away at Matthais Bachinger's defences.

More grinding consistency from Andy Murray as he lures Bachinger long on the first of two break points.

The Scot serves for the opener next.

Andy Murray strides back to the chair, back in front on the scoreboard. Time for the British number one to rev the engine and see what Bachinger has in the tank.

Phoney war so far, with neither player raising much of a challenge to their opponent's serve. Maybe they are keeping their powder dry and muscles fresh for the finale of the opening set.

Matthias Bachinger holds with relative ease.

"If we started with around a quarter of the 22,300 seats filled we might be closer to a third now. It's hardly a rocking New York summer night, more a breezy autumnal evening, but there's enough food and drink being carried in to keep everyone busy while we wait for the match to spark into life."

Matthias Bachinger unleashes a zinger of return, lunging out wide to hit a cross-court winner off Andy Murray's first serve at 40-15 down.

Shot of the match so far for my money. It isn't good enough to make a lasting impression on the scoreboard though.

Behind the grandstands there is a postcard perfect sunset with the New York skyline bathed in tango light.

It has been a low-key start, rather in keeping with a less than bubbly vibe in a quarter-full Arthur Ashe Stadium, Andy Murray holds with ease to restore his lead on the board.

A deep-space level of atmosphere at the centrepiece court at the moment.

Matthias Bachinger, a fuzzy egg of fella with blond hair and healthy 5 o'clock shadow on his chin, is on the board with a service hold to 30.

He looks a little like Jim Courier. The German will have to channel the American scuttler to get involved in the outcome of this one.

Andy Murray cracks down a whiplash ace off his first serve. He gives Matthias Bachinger a glimmer as he gives away two points with some less convincing serving, but shuts the door sharpish to take the opening game.
