  3. Player reactionpublished at 04:27 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2015

Andy Murray speaking on court: "Bhambri made it very aggressive, he came to the net, he made it tough. I've never hit with him or seen him before. He shouldn't be ranked 300 and odd in the world. I'm sure he will be ranked higher at the end of the year."

    BBC Radio 5 live

Legendary coach Nick Bollettieri: "Overall it was a good first round for Murray, he made a few errors, and was a little emotional. His serve was good at the times it needed to be."

  5. Game, set and matchpublished at 04:23 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2015

Murray storms into a 3-0 advantage - just. A heavy volley, with the court wide open, sneaks inside the base-line. But Bhambri holds his nerve, and both of his serves, for 3-2.

Murray responds by doing the same, thumping down a second serve ace. Two points away from victory, which becomes one as Bhambri smashes into the net.

Four match points become three. Murray serves at 6-3, Bhambri's return is too long, and Murray fist pumps the air. The Briton eases into the second round.

  6. Tie-breakpublished at 04:16 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2015

Quick breather for the two players as the 'Andy Murray Male Musicial Choir' (see 02:51) entertain the crowd. The quartet serenade their hero to the tune of Belinda Carlisle's classic 'Heaven is a Place on Earth', before the Briton gets back to business by holding serve to 15. Tie-break time.

Bhambri moves 40-15 ahead by jumping into the Melbourne air to let a long Murray return go through his legs and out. Cheeky. The world number 317 sees out the service game as Murray knows he will need a tie-break to win this first-round match in straight sets.

That slight advantage disappears as Andy Murray races through his service game to level. It has been a good work-out for the Briton - but there's no way he will want to play a fourth set...

Yuki Bhambri is refusing to cave in. The Indian - playing his first Slam match - is not showing too many nerves on the biggest stage of his fledgling career. He holds serve to maintain the teeniest of advantages.

The Murray serve is firing. He blasts down two aces - both around the 200kph mark - before another bomb can only be met by a shaky Bhambri backhand. The Indian's is pegged back on the base line with some heavy Murray returns, finally crumbling with a loose cross-court forehand.

  11. MURRAY BREAKSpublished at 03:58 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2015

Murray has a chance to grab that break back from Bhambri's grasp. He has a pair of chances, but needs just the one. A loose Bhambri return is pounced by the Briton, whose cross-court backhand is out of his opponent's reach. Relief.

Murray holds to stop the rot. Bhambri is gunning for a fourth straight game, but the Briton regains his composure. Can he retrieve the break?

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport at Melbourne Park

"Murray sits at the changeover chuntering away furiously, presumably at himself, for letting this develop into something of a contest. Coach Mauresmo rests her chin on her hand while fitness trainer Matt Little scratches his head, perplexed. Meanwhile, huge cheers roll over the stands from the nearby Court Three as Aussie Marinko Matosevic wins a five-setter. He will play the winner of this one next."

Murray sets up a break point to hit straight back, but blows it as Bhambri scampers across court to flash a sweeping return past the world number six. Deuce - not once but twice - before Murray crashes a forehand into the net on Bhambri's advantage. The odds on a fourth set are quickly being slashed...

  15. BHAMBRI BREAKSpublished at 03:47 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2015

Andy Murray shrieks some angry words that I cannot possible repeat in a BBC live text commentary as Yuki Bhambri moves within striking distance.

The Indian holds his nerve, as Murray completely loses his. The Briton thumps his racket towards the blue court as Bhambri breaks.

Andy Murray pegs back his opponent from a commanding position of 40-0, but sees a break point disappear down the pan as he loses a challenge.

The pair slug it out as we go to deuce for a third time, when Yuki Bhambri nearly takes out a spectator with a wild top edge. But the Indian regains his composure to bat off Murray's hopes of an early break.

Another Bhambri can do Murray can do better. The Briton holds serve to love in a routine game, powerfully finding a way past his opponent. That's why there are 311 places between them in the world rankings....

India's Yuki Bhambri serves in the opening game of the third set as he looks to create an almighty shock by turning this match back in his favour. I can't see that happening - Ana Ivanovic has more chance of being in the second round than him, I'd respectfully suggest. Bhambri holds his serve comfortably.
