So who can qualify for the semi-finals? Nadal could progress tonight, depending on the result of the evening match between Stan Wawrinka and David Ferrer.

Anything other than a three-set win for Wawrinka should see the Spaniard through.

Andy Murray? Hope is not lost. The second seed plays Wawrinka in his final group match on Friday and we'll know more about what the Briton needs to do after this evening's round-robin match.

Phil: Can somebody please give us a close match? This is supposed 2 B the best players in the world and yet we're getting one-sided matches.

Jeff Winter: We need to cut Nadal some slack. After all his injuries and appendectomy, it takes a while for a top athlete to come back.

Another masterful straight-sets win for Nadal at the 02. Many thought he would be an also-ran in this season-ending finale, but the Spaniard is finding his rhythm again after a tricky year and has beaten two great champions with ease.

"I think I played well in general," says a victorious Nadal, who isn't guaranteed a semi-final spot yet but is highly likely to advance.

"The tactic against Murray is to play very well. He has all the shots so the only way to try to damage him is to play with high intensity and be aggressive.

"I didn't think I made that many mistakes. I'm very happy. I'm working hard to play matches like this."

Murray's first serve percentage in the second set was poor, while it was only 43% for the entire match. The British number one made 29 unforced errors and four double faults.

For Murray fans, the highlight was probably that DIY first-set haircut.

Cat-like reflexes from Murray, sprinting to the tape and beating Nadal with a scooped passing shot. 0-15. Hope? A stretch of the hamstrings from the Scot before he prepares to go again.

A frustrated roar from Murray after he nets a backhand return, allowing Nadal to skip to 15-30. A drilled forehand into the corner levels it at 30-30.

But Murray can't continue to squeeze the Spaniard, a netted return brings up a set point and victory is Nadal's thanks to a peachy crosscourt forehand winner. He's back.

    Nadal breaks.

The spectators still believe, causing a right raucous as Murray prepares to serve. It doesn't look good for the Scot,  though, whose shoulders are slumped, falling 0-30 behind to a resurgent great.

A blocked Nadal return slaps into the barrier... adventure from Murray on the next point,  stepping forward, passing Nadal with a screwed backhand. 30-30.

But Murray's game coughing a spluttering like a rusty old motor. Break point Nadal... The British number one nets a straightforward forehand and it's a limp end to a match which promised much.

Murray unable to sow any seeds of doubt on the Nadal serve. There's an absence of intensity when the Spaniard serves, a hold almost seems routine, which it often has been in this match. Murray fights back from 40-15 to 40-30 but Nadal is never under extreme pressure.

Oof! Murray with a dropper, plenty of slice on that one and it drops deftly over the net before Nadal can pounce. Murray cantering to 40-0, a rare misfired forehand return from the fifth seed helping Murray's cause, but the Brit produces another double fault. A free lunch for Nadal. A puff of the cheeks from Murray.

Nadal with a chance at 40-30... Murray closes his eyes, shakes his head... A wasteful return from Nadal on the forehand, though, allows the Scot to wriggle free.

Nadal hitting cleanly, with brio, with accuracy. The 14-time Grand Slam champion in total control, becoming more intimating with each game. The old snarl is back, as is that tigerish growl. Murray attempting to outwit the Spaniard, working him this way and that before racing to the tape - but the Briton nets his volley and it's a routine hold to 15.

    Nadal breaks

Murray increasingly resembling a character from One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest with each passing minute. The Briton muttering to himself, whispering, complaining about something or other.

There's plenty to question - Murray coughs up two double faults in an ugly game, gifting Nadal three break points.

And Nadal breaks without having to do much.. Murray's forehand like a broken windmill,  he hammers a crosscourter into the tramlines and the Spaniard now in a dominant position.

Nadal going through his familiar routine before serving, a tug of the shorts, fingers through the hair, a wipe of the cheeks... Murray shaking his head on the other side, unhappy about something or other. Perhaps Nadal's routine is becoming tiresome.

Murray back into contention, from 30-0 to 30-30, a winning forehand return the highlight. But Nadal comes through to hold without much fuss as Murray is unable to get a hold of the game on the next two points.
