I don't think Murray's tactics are wrong, and there's nothing wrong physically, but he has to focus on what's happening on the court and focus on each point rather than getting distracted. He can turn this around but Rafa is too good if he continues to be distracted.

    Murray 4-6 Nadal

A series of volleys from Murray on the opening point but the Scot, isolated at the net, is forced to watch Nadal pass him. The Brit leaking points, a dreamy Nadal backhand leaving Murray with little option but to hastily smack his forehand long. 0-30.

Nadal oozing confidence now - crunching a forehand winning return to bring up three set points. The Spaniard's supremacy is no surprise.

The former world number one pulls a fine volley out of his magic bag and Murray chases in hope rather than belief. First set goes to Nadal after a super 58 minutes.

I wonder how much John McEnroe sees of himself in Andy Murray. His doubles partner Peter Fleming certainly sees several similarities.

Murray working hard from the back of the court, being made to dash from side to side as Nadal controls the Scot with canny shots into the corners.

The British number one still has a sniff at 40-30, though, but it's Nadal who again comes out on top of the next baseline slug-fest and Murray reacts by launching verbal arrows towards his camp.

Murray has faced a crisis in this set but has knuckled down. His concentration might be in and out but he's been up against it and has produced some excellent tennis.

There's not an enormous amount in this match but Nadal is shading it. Rafa doesn't mind losing the first set as long as it's brutal and takes the legs out of his opponent. He always wants to make it super-tough and these points are taking their toll.

  8. Murray 4-4 Nadal*published at 15:03

A change of shirt for Nadal during the changeover.. The Spaniard sweating as profusely as an Elvis impersonator in a basement club.

Murray nibbles the frame of his racquet as what he thought was an ace is called out. Fortune favours Nadal as a net cord goes his way... but still the Spaniard needs two overheads to see off the Scot. A wave of the hand from Nadal, acknowledging his good luck.

Murray spluttering now, though. An iffy smash gifts Nadal two break points. Two beefy serves help Murray see off the danger, but there's more than a hint that Nadal is on the up in this match, Murray taking his time to close out his service games, but that is what he eventually does here. Five break points saved in two games.

The standard so far has been eye-wateringly high. Nadal has entertained with some super shot-making, a glimpse of what might be in 2016.

At 30-30 it could not be closer, but the Scot returns long and Nadal proceeds to 40-30. Murray, though, not giving up, stepping in from the baseline, forcing Nadal onto his heels and dragging the game to deuce.

Brutal hitting from the back of the court... a shift in momentum as Nadal runs around to his forehand, unleashing a thunderous crosscourt winner which Murray can't keep on target. Advantage. It's tight, but Nadal wriggles free as Murray once again fails to negotiate the barrier.

Bravo, Mr Nadal. The spectators heartily applauding after a fabulous point... Murray scampering to the tape, stretching to fetch, but Nadal is marauding on the other side and simply pats away a winning volley for break point.

Murray's camp are bellowing encouragement from the sidelines as the Briton drags Nadal back to deuce for a third time thanks to a solid serve.

Nadal's forehand return fails him. Advantage. And a big serve from Murray allows him a produce a simple forehand to secure the hold.

Fabulous manipulation from Nadal, a deft sliced volley puts Murray on the defensive and he follows up with an irretrievable volley.

From 15-15 to 15-30, a familiar Murray monologue ensues after he fails to swat Nadal when he had oodles of space and oodles of time. Next? A limp Murray backhand and Nadal has two break points.

Surgeon-like precision on the next Murray serve, though, straight down the middle, erases one breaker. A throw of the dice from the Scot on the next point - a driving volley which clips the tape and evades the Spaniard.

From deuce to advantage thanks to a lasered ace, his first of the match. But a sloppy forehand levels things up to deuce again.

  12. *Murray 2-3 Nadalpublished at 14:38

"Come on," Murray tells himself as he watches Nadal balloon a backhand into the tramlines, falling 15-30 behind.

Most of the action taking place around the baseline... a brilliant rally... Nadal takes the initiative with a thumping forehand down the line, but Murray retrieves... the Spaniard attempts to see off the Scot with an overhead, but Murray's holding firm - although it's only a matter of time before he folds, which he does after a second overhead from Nadal. 30-30.

Sweat dripping down Nadal's nose... a sweaty wet patch must be cleaned up, which Murray questions... Eventually we go again, and a drilled Murray backhand into the tape secures Nadal the hold.

There is much laughter from the courtside VIP seats during the changeover, and it's coming from a familiar source. John McEnroe has snuck into the arena and is sitting next to former doubles partner Peter Fleming. McEnroe is chatting, gesticulating and generally wound up like a coiled spring, obviously.

  15. Murray 2-2 Nadal*published at 14:34

During the changeover Andy Murray delves into his bag, finds a pair of scissors and chops off a strand of mane. How peculiar. I wonder what else he has in his bag? Nail clippers? Tweezers? Waxing strips?

Anyway, to the tennis. It's 15-15, Murray's first serve could do with being a touch more accurate. The Scot's second serve does the job, though, gets a short-ish rally going and Nadal nets a backhand.

A Nadal forehand bounces beyond the baseline - 40-15 - followed by a nicely worked Murray forehand winner for an easy hold.

Zachary: Of course Nadal will win another Slam, question is will he outside of Roland Garros?

A more comfortable service game from the Spaniard, easily collecting the opening two points.

Murray, though, ups the ante, unleashing a super crosscourt backhand winner to reduce the arrears. A 89mph-shot full of menace.

Murray winners are few and far between in this game, however, and the fifth seed holds to 15, finishing off with a super forehand winner, a quick one-two from the serve.

Will Nadal win another Grand Slam title?

Ruaridh Kerr: Of course he can. 1 French Open is very possible. Wimbledon? Can't see that.

Naomi Anne:#Rafa, external will win another slam, probably @rolandgarros, external as he can use the baseline rallies and his physicality much better there

  19. Murray 1-1 Nadal*published at 14:25

    Nadal breaks

A beguiling opening. A baseline battle ensues... from tramline to tramline they go... for 23 shots, 24 shots... Murray abruptly ending it by screwing a forehand long.

The Scot isn't behind for too long, from 0-15 to 30-15, Murray's serve a reliable tool.

But the Briton throws away his lead, wildly swinging at a forehand which flies towards the crowd. From 30-30 to break point, Nadal dominating from the back of the court in the latter stages of this game. Murray way way wide.

Nadal adding venom to his strokes, Murray attempting to change momentum but all he does is net.
