    Kvitova 2-3 *Konta

Petra Kvitova shows that she can do feather duster as well as sledge hammer with a lovely dab of a drop-shot from the baseline.

That drops door-nail dead about a foot into Konta's side of the court for 0-15.

Konta cuffs down a double fault to tighten the vice a little to 15-30.

A mighty rally of bash and crash. A Kvitova tickle. Konta on the move, runs it down and deftly dinks a winning reply.

A big point to win there. 30-30.

Kvitova whacks away though to bring up 30-40 and break point.

Konta with a death-or-glory cross-court forehand smears through the paint to bring up deuce.

    Kvitova 2-3 *Konta

First blood to the British number one.

Petra Kvitova starting to spray the ball outside the lines. The only consistent thing about the Czech this season has been her inconsistency.

A double fault at 15-40 hands over the break to Johanna Konta.

    *Kvitova 2-2 Konta

Now then, 0-30 to Johanna Konta, time to test Petra Kvitova's nerves. The Czech can get twitch in clutch moments.

And that is a tight tug of a forehand between the tramlines.

0-40 and three break points to Konta.

  4. Konta saves two break pointspublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 22 June 2016

    *Kvitova 2-2 Konta

Johanna Konta duffs down her second double fault of the match before over-cooking on the forehand wing to bring up 15-40 and two break points Kvitova.

It is not just Kvitova's power that does for her opponents. It is the fear of that power that produces mistakes of their racquets.

Konta is made of stern stuff though. A couple of bazooka serves are too feisty for Kvitova to keep a leash on her returns.

Deuce. More serving bosh. Game Konta.

    Kvitova 2-1 *Konta

    Call the Devonshire Park groundstaff.

Johanna Konta swishes thin air as she tries to hit a relatively routine forehand. She looks accusingly at the court surface after being made to look a little silly.

    That is 40-0 Kvitova.

Konta puts the brakes on the Czech's attempt to serve-and-volley her way to the game, with a dipping return that Kvitova cannot dig out.

But that cushion is more than enough for Kvitova to ride out.

    *Kvitova 1-1 Konta

Johanna Konta advances into mid-court and slaps a big forehand at 30-30. But that is too central.

It is right up Petra Kvitova's street in terms of direction and style.

Not many bigger baseline sluggers on Tour than Kvitova and she returns with interest with a mighty wallop.

    Break point Kvitova.

Seen off by Konta and she slips off the hook and away to the safety of a service hold.

    Kvitova 1-0 *Konta

Petra Kvitova is wearing a navy blue outfit that blends fairly seamlessly into the backboards of the same colour.

Maybe it is some sort of sneaky on-court camouflage. It works well for the world number 11 as she creeps into the net and pats away a backhand volley for 30-0.

Konta nibbles a point of the serve, but that is all she is getting.

    Kvitova v Konta

Petra Kvitova won the only previous meeting between the pair, prevailing 7-5 6-3 at Flushing Meadows in September.

    The Czech will serve first.

A quick couple of sips from two separate bottles - maybe making up squash in her mouth like a kid - and Konta is ready to receive.

    Here we go.

Never mind last week, last year at Eastbourne Johanna Konta was ranked 146th in the world and her appearance in the last eight was the first time that she had made the quarter-finals of a WTA top-level event.

Since then she has made the last 16 at the US Open, the semi-finals at the Australian Open, and is up to 18th in the world.

This morning, she was announced as the 17th seed at Wimbledon - the first British woman to be amongst the seeds at the tournament since Jo Durie in 1984.

This afternoon, the pair are reunited and the giggles have stopped.

They are next up on the Centre Court at Eastbourne with a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs.
