    *Williams 1-1 Putintseva

Yulia Putintseva is wisely keeping Serena Williams moving and keeping herself out of any baseline slug-fests.

A delicious drop-shot/crosscourt pass combo shows the way she has to play and he seals the game as Serena loads up on forehand and wallops straight into the net.

    Williams 1-0 *Putintseva

Yulia Putintseva saw a second serve slapped contemptuously back past her for a clean winner and 0-30.

    Ominious.

The Kazakh will be pleased to have made it to deuce from there.

    "Joue Mademoiselle Williams".

Maybe there was a little more pre-serve ball bouncing, maybe a little sluggish body language, but there were not too many other signs of Serena being slow to start.

The American whittle through the first game for the lost of just one point.

As always in a match involving Serena Williams - the case for her opponent needs a little more looking into than that of the 21-time Grand Slam champion.

Kazakh Yulia Putintseva has lost both her previous meetings with Serena Williams and is ranked a relatively lowly 60.

However the 21-year-old has breezed through to the last eight of a Grand Slam for the first time without dropping a set and claiming the scalps of Andrea Petkovic and Carla Suarez Navarro.

She is in form. And, perhaps just as importantly, the weather is not. It is bitter out there and if there is one thing that Florida native Williams does not like it is the cold.

    Williams v Putinseva

    Cheers Caroline.

As Novak Djokovic moves within two matches of a clean sweep of the Grand Slams, time for Serena Williams - a player who has twice packed out the mantelpiece with the four biggies simultaneously - to take the stage.

The women's number one, the defending champion and general queen bee is striding out onto Court Philippe Chatrier right now.

I'm going to leave you in the capable hands of Mike Henson, who will guide you through the women's quarter-final between defending champion Serena Williams and Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan.

That match is due to start soon on Philippe-Chatrier Court.

    Djokovic 6-3 7-5 6-3 Berdych

Novak Djokovic speaks in French as has been his want over the fortnight.

According to my quick and clunky translation, he says that it was a difficult match, but he found his form at the right time and is happy.

He adds that the rain delays are not a problem because it is always a joy to return to Roland Garros.

So Novak Djokovic's new thing is to bring on a ball boy/girl at the end of a match and get them to help with his celebrations.

He makes his little helper swing their arms in the air back and forth, as they turn to every corner of the crowd.

The audience love it, of course.

One match point goes amiss but Djokovic makes no mistake with the second.

A huge serve defies Berdych and the Serb seals victory in straight sets.

Djokovic has now reached his 30th Grand Slam semi-final, his eighth at Roland Garros. Not bad, not bad at all.

Djokovic moves to 30-15 after a fantastic exchange of backhand slices.

On his second serve, the world number one then earns double match point.

Novak Djokovic earns a triple break point with a gorgeous lob over Berdych's head. This could be a deal breaker.

He needs a second attempt, but Djokovic seals it. Now to serve for the match.

    *Goffin 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 3-2 Thiem

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique - hipster that he is - is shunning the main stage to take in a bit of Dominic Thiem and David Goffin's quarter-final.

He has backed Thiem to be a future world number one.

Maybe. But the Austrian is down in the third set, trailing 3-2 and facing serve.

    Djokovic 6-3 7-5 4-3 Berdych*

What with Djokovic throwing his racquet around and Berdych having a go at the umpire, we've had quite a lot of drama this afternoon.

On court, Berdych snatches two points from Djokovic's serve but sends a backhand wide to miss out on break point.

And the Serb then slams a backhand winner to take his service game.

Daily Mail writer Mike Dickson on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra: "Clay takes the rain in a way that grass doesn't, but it is the lines that the players seem to worry about more when it gets wet.

"This is tough for Djokovic. When he came to play Wawrinka in the final last year it was on the back of an exhausting five-setter against Andy Murray and I think the schedule has worked against him again this year."

A ding-donger of a tie-break over on Court Suzanne Lenglen and it is Dominic Thiem who emerges victorious.

The Austrian levels up his quarter-final against David Goffin with a 9-7 success in the shoot-out.

All square over there. And they're still playing through the rain.

We have an angry Tomas Berdych. A very angry Tomas Berdych.

He argues loudly with the umpire as both players are ushered off court because of the rain.

Berdych is shouting: "This is a circus. An absolute circus."
