A tough call for the umpire on court two. They're in the middle of a tie-break in the fourth set between Jack Sock and Robin Haase, but the rain is pelting down.

It's the only court still in session now.

Dutchman Haase wins the tie-break, so it's going to five sets, and play is finally suspended.

    Gibbs 7-5 2-6 2-1 Watson*

Another scream from Heather Watson as she lands a thumping volley after a long rally.

Nicole Gibbs grunts from the baseline which she's been pinned to, but she scampers forward and slices over to level it.

But look out, the umpire is out of his chair and has decided to take the players off again because of rain.

    BOOOOOOOO.

What a landmark day this is.

It's not only the French Open curtain-raiser, but the world number one turns 29. Happy birthday Novak.

    *Gibbs 7-5 2-6 2-1 Watson

Hummm....Heather Watson may have lost her concentration again.

Watson asks the umpire to get out of his seat to check her second serve. She thinks it's in, but it's out. She's 0-40 down in her service game.

The Briton saves two break points...but a clumsy volley into the net hands the game to Nicole Gibbs.

It was all going so smoothly as well...

These two are playing doubles together next week, but there's a feisty battle brewing between them at the moment.

Nicole Gibbs screams with delight as she takes the first point of her serve, and directs a stare at Heather Watson.

Finally the American stops the rot by serving an ace to take the game.

    *Gibbs 7-5 2-6 0-1 Watson

Heather Watson certainly looks fired up, but the rain might scupper the game again. The brollies are back out.

Nicole Gibbs keeps Watson on her toes, they're level-pegging at 30-all.

But Watson screeches with delight as she pops a return over after coming into the net for 40-30 and the Brit finishes off to hold her serve.

  13. Game and second setpublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 22 May 2016

    Gibbs 7-5 2-6 Watson*

American Nicole Gibbs is struggling to contain Heather Watson, who earns two set points at 15-40.

Gibbs fends both of them off to take it to deuce. But Watson has the advantage and, at the third attempt, claims the second set.

A very composed Watson on court right now. She needed just 12 minutes to finish it off.

    *Gibbs 7-5 2-5 Watson

You often ponder what a hefty rain break does to a player in terms of mentality.

Looks like it's done wonders for Heather Watson. She holds her service game to love.

    Gibbs 7-5 2-4 Watson*

Heather Watson takes the first point. She comes in close and taps over, and Nicole Gibbs isn't quick enough to get the return in time.

Then a powerful cross-court backhand from the Brit makes it 0-30.

Gibbs pulls it back briefly, but then hits a return long. Watson earns two break points.

A sweet forehand into the corner hands Watson the game. A great start for the Guernsey girl.

    *Gibbs 7-5 2-3 Watson

Looks like there's a few more people in the crowd on court three compared to earlier, which is nice to see.

Heather Watson composes herself in her seat, packing her stuff into her bag and sipping on her energy drink, before hopping into place for the restart. Off we go again.

    *Gibbs 7-5 2-3 Watson

Two hours and 45 minutes later, and Heather Watson and Nicole Gibbs are back on court.

British number two Watson is a set down but 3-2 up in the second. We'll get underway shortly, with American Gibbs to serve.

It's still very soggy out there, but TV people are telling me play looks set to continue for the rest of the day. Fingers crossed.

    Gibbs 7-5 2-3 Watson

That's it on court three for now. The rain is deemed too heavy for play to continue. According to the TV commentary team, courts two and 14 had already gone off.

We'll be back with updates when play resumes.

Everyone do a sun dance, please.

    *Gibbs 7-5 2-3 Watson

A change of racquet for Ms Watson as she prepares to serve. A double fault to start...not ideal.

She recovers to go 40-15 up after showing some good forward movement towards the net.

But the errors are still creeping in. Gibbs recovers to make it deuce.

A second advantage point for Watson, thanks to an ace down the middle, and a tidy forehand down the line sees the Brit hold her serve.
