    Gibbs 1-3 Watson*

Neither Gibbs or Watson are that tall - the former is 5ft 5ins and Watson is two inches taller - but they're hitting some high, looping returns.

It's the Brit who's coming out on top. Watson breaks her American opponent to take a 3-1 lead.

Heather Watson serves a strong ace to take a 30-0 lead.

But Gibbs is pinning the Brit to the baseline with her powerful returns. Watson slips and slides from side to side and eventually hits long.

She recovers, though, and at 40-15, Watson pulls out a smart double-handed backhand cross-court and it stays with serve.

    Gibbs 1-1 Watson*

Nicole Gibbs, in a stripey sailor-like navy blue skirt, races into a 40-0 lead, after Heather Watson hits long on the base line.

Watson snatches a point back, and then another after a Gibbs fault. It's 40-30.

Gibbs slams a return into the net. Deuce! Watson's done well to recover here.

But the American takes the advantage and comes through her serve.

    *Gibbs 0-1 Watson

We're underway on court three. It's pretty empty and eerily quiet, bar the odd appreciative clap of the hands.

She's made to work for it by Nicole Gibbs, but Heather Watson holds her serve to come through her opening game.
