  1. Federer tired after epic quarter-final?published at 13:32 British Summer Time 8 July 2016

Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

Watching this match, it would be very low odds that it would be Federer making a bad start.

Is he feeling the after-effects of that five-setter (in the quarter-final against Marin Cilic)?

He hasn't played a lot of tennis and I wouldn't be surprised if he was feeling the effects of that match.

    Raonic 4-1 *Federer

Milos Raonic's third ace of the match, slapped down the centre is a lost cause for Roger Federer as soon as it leaves the Canadian's racquet.

Raonic is already shaking his bat in celebration. I'm getting vibes of Bond villain Jaws off the big man.

And that is bad news for the Fed heads in Centre Court.

    *Raonic 3-1 Federer

Roger Federer is starting to get a look at these thunderbolt tee-offs.

A fine block return takes the pace of the Raonic serve and uses it against its owner, dropping one perfectly on the baseline and out of reach.

    Jujitsu tennis. Deuce.

  5. 'Not Roger in his prime'published at 13:25

    *Raonic 3-1 Federer

    John McEnroe
Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

Milos is a very intelligent young man and he knew the early stages would be critical. He is much better prepared now than his last Wimbledon semi-final two years ago.

He has immense respect for Roger Federer, but he has to say to himself that Roger's not the same player as he was. It is not Roger in his prime.

It's unbelievable Federer has gone through his entire career without needing a knee operation until earlier this year. He's moving fantastically well considering he has had that knee operation.

  7. 'Federer handed Raonic the break'published at 13:24 British Summer Time 8 July 2016

    *Raonic 3-1 Federer

    Pat Cash
Former Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 live

He's got a magnificent second serve, but it let him down there, which is very unusual. Federer just handed him the break.

    *Raonic 3-1 Federer

Milos Raonic prises open the first break chance of the match with some canny deep slice that foxes even wily old Roger.

And there is a double fault from Federer!

He had only made two others in the whole tournament.

Raonic has started more like Federer than Federer has.

    Raonic 2-1 *Federer

Milos Raonic's forehand is a vicious caveman club of a shot.

Swinging from the hip, he whips away a winner from midcourt for 40-15.

Roger Federer is struggling to get a racquet to even the Raonic second serve.

Another floaty pat back over the net and the Canadian advances and monsters away another big forehand.

Roger Federer dusts off a service hold to love.

    Both men have started well.

You would expect that of Roger who has made Centre Court his front room over the last decade. For Milos that is a bigger plus point.

    Raonic 1-0 *Federer

    This is following the template.

    Service winner. 15-0.

    Double fault. 15-15.

Raonic slaps away a fend return for 30-15.

Three points in and Roger Federer has barely felt ball on string.

Amid the booming serves, suddenly a couple of rallies break out. And Raonic looks pretty composed when they do. He wins the first with a neat approach and volley. He is marginally wide with a forehand that Federer was not getting near.

But finishes the game as he started it with a service winner.

If it is a tight match, world number seven Raonic has the better record in tie-breaks this year.

The tale of the tape then.

Roger Federer leads the head to head record by nine to two, including a straightforward straight-sets win at the same stage of Wimbledon two years ago.

Raonic won the last meeting though rolling over the Swiss 6-4 6-4 in Brisbane earlier this year.

Who is the greatest of all time?

Chigs: Federer is the G.O.A.T. He pioneered the modern era of tennis - people said he was finished at 29/30 & yet he's still here at 34.

Tim Jopling (Author): GOAT is...nobody! No way to compare all the eras. I don't think it's Federer either, he had v.weak opponents, excluding Nadal.

Matthew Vins: GOAT has to be Federer. He was consistently a winner/finalist on ALL surfaces and his longevity is incredible. Rafa GOAT on clay.

    Raonic 0-0 Federer

    Boris Becker
Three-time Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

It is very important for Milos to serve aggressively and take his chances early on as the longer this match goes on the better it is for Federer.

  20. Players on courtpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 8 July 2016

Milos Raonic and Roger Federer are in the holding bay just behind the Centre Court sightscreens.

Raonic is pawing the ground, eager to taste the sawdust of the colosseum floor.

Federer second in line, is a picture of serenity.

Finally the clock ticks past 13:00 BST and the traps slide open.

    Here they come.
