The rain continues to fall, the British fans still remain in the stadium. Chairs are being removed, however, hinting that there will not be a second match. The covers are being dragged over the court.

Wait for it, there is an official announcement on the way. 

"Ladies and gentlemen, unfortunately because of the deteriorating weather the match is cancelled," says a gentleman over the public address system. 

Romania’s world number five Simona Halep withdraws from this summer's Olympics because of concerns over the Zika virus. 

"The reason for my decision is the concern regarding the danger posed by the Zika virus," said Halep in a statement. 

"After several talks with doctors and my family, I concluded that the risks are too high for my career and for my health, especially as a woman. 

"Family is much too important for me and I can’t risk not being able to have one of my own after my career in tennis is over."

The night Kyle Edmund came of age. Here is how Edmund secured the second set.

We are still awaiting news about whether James Ward's match with Dusan Lajovic will go ahead this evening. The majority of spectators have given up hope, but we'll stick with it until told otherwise.

"To get us off to a good start was great. Each set i really found my game. I was very pleased with my win," says Kyle Edmund. 

"We played three games before it rained. I wanted to get the intensity high from the first game back. I managed it when he broke back in the second set. 

"I just tried to relax during the rain breaks. When you go back in it's almost a lull. I had some food and had a shower. It's not hard to switch on and off. 

"It's important to say how important that crowd is. Captain Leon Smith is helpful as is everybody else on the team."

First blow to Britain in this three-day contest and if Edmund continues in this form the visitors have a great chance of coming away from Serbia with victory.

That was a professional match - he looked like a veteran out there. He played like in was in a Challenger match.

Edmund walks to the tape, shakes hands with his opponent. There is no wild celebration from the Briton after his straight sets win in one hour and 59 minutes. His work is not yet done. 

Tipsarevic has played like a man who has been absent from the game for many years because of injury. He's been rusty, out-of-sorts, and comfortably outplayed by his younger opponent. Three match points Edmund... a swinging return wide from Tipsarevic and Edmund wins the first rubber for Britain. Impressive.

Tipsarevic is down and could soon be out. Crosscourt backhand long from Tipsarevic, and Edmund is skipping along the baseline with two break points in the bag. A third-set whitewash? Highly likely as a careless Tipsarevic sends a forehand long.  

This has been an impressively mature performance by the 21-year-old Edmund against the former world number eight. Tipsarevic has offered little resistance against the powerful Edmund. The opening two points slip away, however... but Edmund levels at 30-30 with two forehand winners. "Ole! Ole" chirp the British supporters. 

An ace. A warrior-like groan from Edmund. Another big first serve and from 0-30 down Edmund holds.

Tipsarevic in trouble. This match could soon be over. A double fault presents Edmund with three break points and his hopes are being dashed at lighting speed. 

An ace. One break point saved. But Edmund has oodles of time to run around on the second serve and break with a crackerjack of a forehand. 

"Here we go," scream the raucous students rooting for Edmund and the Briton responds by skipping to a 40-15 lead. Tipsarevic way behind the baseline, twirling, dancing, trying anything, but unable to counter-punch. Edmund in control.

What a message this is sending out to the British team. I think the Serbia team through they could win this.

The third set begins with the rain continuing to fall. Tipsarevic undercooked and overpowered, unable to negotiate the barrier on successive points, the Serb tiring, and he's 40-0 down. 

Beautiful! A forehand return beats Tipsarevic and the Briton is in a hurry.
