Night time tennis in the drizzle makes for an interesting spectacle, while the sparsity of the crowd gives this match the feel of an over 60s invitational rather than a Davis Cup quarter-final. Edmund unconcerned, Britain's supporters cheering the loudest, as Tipsarevic's volley drops wide. Game and second set.

    Tipsarevic 3-6 4-5 Edmund*

Tipsarevic stepping in more frequently in this game, refusing to give up this set without a fight, but he allows Edmund to sneak back into it  - his footwork awry and a backhand wide - and we're at deuce.

Advantage. Deuce. Still a sprinkling of supporters sing. Advantage. Deuce. Advantage. Rain is falling... But Tipsarevic wraps it up.

Edmund is teak tough, racing to a 40-0 lead, treating pressure as a friend, and ending the game with an ace down the T.

That was a good effort by Edmund, but what a throwaway game by Tipsarevic.

  5. Edmund breakspublished at 19:23 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Tipsarevic 3-6 3-4 Edmund*

Oof! Edmund hits a forehand into the corner which is quicker than the speed of light. Unstoppable. It's 15-15 before Tipsarevic coughs up a double fault to offer Edmund another chance. The pair trade blows from the baseline... Edmund forced from side to side... Tipsarevic dictating, and Edmund nets. We're level at 30-30.

But another double fault from Tipsarevic gifts Edmund a break point. Sloppy. Tipsarevic then drags a backhand into the tramlines and Edmund could wrap this set up.

  6. Tipsarevic breaks backpublished at 19:19 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

Edmund, a forehand like the hand of Thor, forcing his opponent onto his heels. Tipsarevic is trying, he's digging in, and Edmund offers him a glimmer with a slapdash forehand into the barrier.

30-30, the door is ajar, from 40-30 to deuce after a double fault, Tipsarevic is knocking... Edmund ignoring his rival, punching a forehand for advantage.

But Tipsarevic is refusing to go away, knocking louder... Edmund into the tramlines. Deuce. A mistimed forehand long - advantage Serbia! But Edmund's serve comes to his rescue.

An iffy Edmund backhand. Advantage Serbia. Edmund opting for power rather than precision, forehand long, and Tipsarevic is level.

Tipsarevic continuing to struggle with the backhand... a handful of British fans making the noise of a thousand as they serenade their "Super Kyle". Neither player moving particularly well, both tentative on the red dirt after the rain.

Serbia inch ahead, to 30-15, but Edmund eats up Tipsarevic's second serve in one bite - a stunning backhand return down the line, leveling at 30-30. But his next return is wild, and wide. A netted return follows and Tipsarevic is hanging on.

Edmund finds the paint with a forehand into the corner and the scoreboard is ticking and it's a rapid hold to love for the Briton. Enough time has been wasted, I guess.

Some people have gone home probably thinking that would be the end of the night. Now we've had a Tipsarevic fall right at the beginning of resumption.

It's 30-30, Tipsarevic has recovered from his tumble, and this game might reach a conclusion. Possibly. A hold for Tipsarevic, but Edmund already with a break in this set.

  11. Time outpublished at 19:01 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

    Tipasrevic 3-6 0-2 Edmund*

Where were we? Who knows. Ouch. And before play can get into full swing, Tipsarevic is on the floor, stretching out his leg, feeling his right foot, after falling over while hitting a forehand. Sudden movements clearly not recommended on the red clay.

  12. Raonic withdraws from Olympicspublished at 18:58 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

While we've been away, it has been announced that Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic has withdrawn from the Rio Olympics over health concerns, including Zika virus.

The Canadian world number seven said on his Facebook page: "It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my withdrawal from participation in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

“After much deliberation with my family and coaches, I am making this decision for a variety of health concerns including the uncertainty around the Zika virus.

“This was a difficult, personal choice and I do not wish for it to impact the decision of any other athlete heading to the Games."

  14. Hello (again)published at 18:58 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

Hello again! Thank you for sticking with us. Tipsarevic and Edmund are warming up (again) and play is about to resume (again) after a long rain delay.

Those with tickets seem to have opted to spend the evening in the local taverns, rather than reappear for this second set. Who can blame them.

  17. Bye for nowpublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

I cannot lie, light is fading and the rain is falling at a constant rate. Few spectators have stayed outdoors on an evening which looks like a damp and dreary November night in Blackpool. It would be surprising if there were to be further play today, but all hope is not lost. Sue Barker has offered to make more tea so we will temporarily halt coverage.

  18. First set pointpublished at 17:28 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

It seems as if we're going to have plenty of time on our hands this evening so why not watch Kyle Edmund secure the first set against Janko Tipsarevic. Watch in slow-mo, hit rewind again and again, play then pause, there is no rush.

It's been a very, very good start by Kyle Edmund. He's shown a lot of nerve and looks like he has a gameplan.
