Great Britain is one for one today folks if you are just getting your head into tennis. Johanna Konta is into the fourth round, Kyle Edmund goes next and tomorrow it's Andy Murray and Dan Evans.

The fourth round is the last-16 stage, so those huge ties in the closing stages are close.

Edmund tonight is an underdog but when British tennis is in such sweet form, why not?

  2. Ready for a scrap?published at 22:25 British Summer Time 2 September 2016

    Welcome back

A quick scan for imagery of Kyle Edmund and it becomes clear he's a grinder.

Picture after picture of a man grinding his teeth in battle, digging in, chomping away in search of reward.

He will need all of that fight and more tonight as he seeks a last-16 place at Flushing Meadows.

If you joined us earlier for Johanna Konta action, welcome back. If not, better late than never. Let's do this folks. I'm limbered up and the backhand feels strong.

Right then, Vinci, Keys, Wozniacki, Tsonga, Sock and of course Konta all win through into round four, all of the detail is below.

Johanna Konta looked finely tuned and there looks to be real hope of a run to the key stages of proceedings.

It's the turn of Kyle Edmund next, he has to tame the wild serves of John Isner. We expect them on court at 22:30 BST and will start a live text some 15 minutes or so before that. Please come back and keep us company.

I'd recommend Goodnight Sweetheart on BBC One at 21:00 BST to fill the void. Nicholas Lyndhurst will no doubt travel back to a time where live texts were all but a dream and tennis players had wooden racquets. If you're all for the tennis, then click 'live coverage' at the top of this page and you can listen to 5 live Sports Extra as Novak Djokovic plays.

Thanks for reading, I'll meet you by the umpire chair at 22:30.

  4. Keys hits right notepublished at 20:29 British Summer Time 2 September 2016

Madison Keys has just come from 1-5 down in the deciding set to beat Japan's Naomi Osaka.

She says it's the best comeback of her career. The eighth seed adds she wants a less dramatic match next. I'm not sure she can bank on that as Caroline Wozniacki awaits.

Keys took 51 minutes to win the decider 7-3 in a tie break and she threw her arms into the air as the win was confirmed. Proper hustle.

If you are just joining us, Johanna Konta made tonight feel like an Anthony Joshua fight night and basically ensured our live text was short and sweet. She ripped through Belinda Bencic. The Swiss was glued to the ropes.

Next up for Konta is Latvian Anastasija Sevastova on Sunday in the fourth round. They have met once before, Konta won in 2013.

It's looking good, world number 14 Konta versus the world number 48. It's the last-16 remember. The business end of the tournament is in sight.

That's right, Dan Evans has had himself a nightmare. Rummage through the sock drawer Dan. You'll have to just keep winning now while you wait for a new one I guess.

Evans meets Stan Wawrinka tomorrow. Easy then.

  7. Wozniacki wins throughpublished at 20:20 British Summer Time 2 September 2016

Caroline Wozniacki, twice a beaten finalist and twice a semi-finalist in New York, is into the fourth round after a straight sets win over Monica Niculescu. Both players had seven break points in the affair but Wozniacki took six of hers to get it done.

Also through to round four on day five of the US Open are seventh seed Roberta Vinci - courtesy of a 6-3 win in the final set against Carina Witthoeft.

So short of waking up one day and thinking enough is enough, just how has Johanna Konta climbed the rankings so effectively?

One reason may be her work with mental coach Joan Coto, a man she spends a few hours a week with via phone or Skype to get her mind in check. Coto claims players generally say 70% of the game is in their head, but yet many fail to commit the training hours to a winning mind.

He says: "You try to find a number of beliefs - I need to win, I don't want to make mistakes, what happens if I lose? - and you replace those with more positive thoughts.

"On court, you have a number of tools you can use to relax. Breathing exercises. Visualisation. You visualise a positive outcome, not winning a match, but a small step like a corner where you want to serve.

"And trigger words you can say in your head, words that keep you thinking positively - 'keep fighting', 'you can do it', 'that point doesn't matter'.

"The philosophy is to focus only on things you can control. Not winning or losing or your ranking but your effort, your attitude. You release the pressure of what you can't control."

Johanna Konta says: "I am happy, I thought I did a good job and I focused all my energies into this match.

"The best I can do is focus on my game and give 100%."

    Konta 6-2 6-1 Bencic

"I wonder what I'll have for dinner."

That must be what's going through the mind of Belinda Bencic as she has jacked in here, her mind is gone, it's now a formality and from the middle of the court, it's a straight forward ball to convert for Johanna Konta at match point.

That took all of 52 minutes.

Johanna Konta had breathing difficulties and needed medical attention in round two. She barely had to even breath to get through round three.

A 107mph ace - her seventh of this match - puts Johanna Konta 40-0 up in this second set.

Belinda Bencic remember has beaten Konta twice before, they look worlds apart here.

Make that eight aces, make that 5-1 in the second. Let's be clear, this is a superb display. She looks so dominant, so energetic, so focused.

  13. Tsonga shining...published at 20:09 British Summer Time 2 September 2016

A beaming Jo-Wilfried Tsonga speaks after beating South African Kevin Anderson in straight sets: "I feel great. I just played good tennis today. Kevin deserved it too but I played really well so I am happy and I hope I will continue.

"It's a long way to go through the draw. I will try to take each match as good as possible and just increase my tennis."

It's Jack Sock or Marin Cilic for Tsonga in round four.

Johanna Konta has every shot and can definitely challenge for Grand Slam titles. It's not just her ranking, it's who she beats that makes you think that.

She creates good speed on the ball herself but she can cope with power and the ball that's coming to her from her opponent. She has good racquet control, quick feet and good balance, and is keeping the momentum going from last year.

  15. Konta breakspublished at 20:08 British Summer Time 2 September 2016

    *Konta 6-2 4-1 Bencic

EastEnders is four minutes old, apologies if I got your hopes up of an early finish so you can see what Phil Mitchell is up to. Is he still in Albert Square?

Johanna Konta has two break points. A lovely drop shot from Belinda Bencic sees one saved, then a rally allows Bencic to send Konta deep and she can only find the net.

We are at deuce. Powerful and beautiful angle found across court by Konta, Bencic is on the run and gets there but Konta puts the volley away. Another break point, she takes it, another wayward return from Bencic.

Strike up the band, tell the fat lady to warm up those vocal chords.

    Konta 6-2 3-1 Bencic*

Belinda Bencic continues to look a little lost. With her racquet on the floor she gives it a little kick in frustration. It was more nursery than Six Nations but still, she looks fed up.

Her hold on serve is solid enough and a nice read on a Johanna Konta volley puts her 0-15 up in the fourth game of this set. Can she build on it? Not a chance. Back comes the Great Britain player who just oozes confidence right now. She has six aces in all and a glut of points where her serve has forced Bencic to go long.

There it is again, good serve, heavy return, that's 3-1 in the second and Konta is yet to face a break point.

  17. Bourne cool?published at 19:58 British Summer Time 2 September 2016

Some of these tennis stars are action heroes right? Their stamina, fight, creativity when under pressure.

Johanna Konta has been quoted as saying she's the female Jason Bourne.

But Konta's claim is more administration that crazy heroism. She likens herself to agent Bourne as she holds multiple passports.

The Australian-born player has Hungarian parents and only became a British citizen in 2012. Quite the mix. She's cool though right?  Oh, forgot to mention, she's a big Taylor Swift fan. Still cool?

    Konta 6-2 2-0 Bencic*

Johanna Konta swigs an orange drink of some kind after another break in the first game of the second set. This could be done and dusted in time for EastEnders folks.

The unforced errors are stacking up for Belinda Bencic.

A Konta ace in the second game underlines the difference in power we are seeing here, it's followed by a smash which Bencic tries to retrieve but can't. A brief show of fight by the troubled player but another smash from Konta is textbook. It sports power and accuracy, lovely shape, just inside the line, game.

  19. Serving up a fourth round place?published at 19:53 British Summer Time 2 September 2016

Johanna Konta his 16 winners to just four from Belinda Bencic in that opening set.

It's serving proving key here though. The Swiss player only won 36% of points on her second serve. Konta has won 67% of points on second serve.

Konta is serving well and has won every single point when she gets a first serve in.

She's applying a lot of pressure and played the perfect set.
