    Dimitrov 1-6 0-3 Murray*

How long before we can start thinking about putting a fork in this one? Again Murray tests the backhand, again Dimitrov fails. The world number two has won eight games in a row and has a double break in the second set.

    Dimitrov nets. Another break point...

  3. *Dimitrov 1-6 0-2 Murraypublished at 01:15 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

Murray is testing that backhand. Over and over and over. The game ticks past the seven-minute mark as Dimitrov again tries to close it out. More sloppiness, more drifting long. Murray breathes hard. Deuce again.

The New York crowd get tetchy. They want some entertainment on Labor Day. Dimitrov, sensing the mob over his shoulder, gets his act together, but only temporarily. An airy backhand sends us onwards. Deuce.

Dimitrov, sticking out the frying pan, gets the sort of luck that might just kickstart his engine. Ivan Lendl doesn't look impressed - when does he? Murray, though, is on a roll. 30-0 becomes 30-30. Then a double fault...

Now then. Just when Dimitrov was looking like burnt toast, he gets a chance. Netcord not kind to Murray, 0-30. Red rag to a bull. 134mph ace, 138mph ace (one of his biggest ever?), four points on the spin for Murray.

    Dimitrov 1-6 0-1 Murray*

In fairness to Dimitrov, it must be hard playing tennis against a black blur. Murray is everywhere at the far end, sprinting, slicing and belting. When one sits up off the top of the net, the fur is hitting the back wall for the earliest possible break.

What on earth is going on out there? Double fault from Dimitrov, 0-30 in the first game of this second set. The crowd try to get behind him, but he's frozen. Long. Three break points...

Nicholas Wall: Great set from Muzza - not sure what Dimitrov can do. Murray stronger in the rallies and he loves a target at the net.

Kate MacKenzie: Been asleep but body programmed to wake up for Murray games! No messing tonight, Andy- in 3, please! That'd be great!

Ian Bradley: The level Murray consistently performs at these days is incredible, hammering on Djokovic's door to take number one spot.

Dimitrov has the ball on his strings at the start of the second. Latecomers arrive wondering how they have managed to miss the first set. Back under way.

    Dimitrov 1-6 Murray

If it keeps going like this, they might have to have an exhibition knockabout to fill the time before the women's singles match later on. Without getting ahead of myself, Dimitrov looks beaten already. Murray seals a one-sided, 30-minute set with an ace.

    Dimitrov 1-5 Murray*

Murray talked about dictating the play, but even he couldn't have predicted this. An eye-of-the-needle pass gives him a double break. The Wimbledon champ to serve for the first set.

  15. *Dimitrov 1-4 Murraypublished at 00:52 British Summer Time 6 September 2016

Murray has a poor ball girl running around with a towel, wiping his face out of habit rather than perspiration. Dimitrov, already looking a little sheepish, is off the top of the net for 30-30, then wide with a backhand for another Murray break point...

Murray is talking to himself and that's always a good sign after a point that he's won. He's fulls of beans right now after an easy hold.

Murray, looking like Lev Yashin in his all-black kit, gives us a first fist pump and cries of "come on" as the world number 24 flaps in the face of his serve. Hold to love, backing up that break. Murray all over this first set.

    Dimitrov 1-3 Murray*

Not one, but two awful smashes from Dimitrov. The first could have been put anywhere, but he somehow finds the Scotsman in New York. The second is into the net. Tame. Murray ahead.

Ashe is far from full, but there are enough spectators tardily taking their seats to draw the ire of the umpire. Still Murray is stepping into that Dimitrov second serve, sending us into yet another eternal baseline duel. 20, 25, 30, 32 strokes. Dimitrov wide. Smash and serve from the Bulgarian, but Murray comes to the net for deuce.
