Johanna Konta is looking every bit the contender. She has one of the best serves in the women's game, moves well, defends much better and plays well off both sides.

She looks confident, determined and focused. She has a strong team in her corner and is in a very good position to go very far in this competition.

There was also a Melbourne restaurant tip from Johanna Konta at the end of her on-court interview, bigging up Hunky Dory.

I've had a little look at the website and I think I am applying for a UK franchise.

It is basically slightly gentrified fish and chips and, having seen how that worked out for noodles, chicken and pizza, it sounds like a winner.

    Who's with me?

Johanna Konta: "The work is exactly the same as a top-10 player, the travel is exactly the same, but I love playing on these amazing courts and in front of these amazing crowds.

"I knew it was a given that I needed to be present in every point of the match."

    Konta 6-4 6-2 Osaka

Naomi Osaka survives a first match point as Johanna Konta over-cooks looking for the knockout blow.

Another goes begging as Konta reaches into a backhand when she could have taken another step.

The end is nigh though for Osaka.

Third time is the charm as Konta chases down a twanging net cord and slaps away into open court.

    Into the third round.

    *Konta 6-4 5-2 Osaka

Naomi Osaka backed up to the cliff-edge at 15-40 down. Two break points Konta.

Osaka bats away the first with her fifth ace of the match, a peppery tee-off there.

But when she fails to repeat the trick on the next point, Konta is primed.

She spots the second serve before it is over the net and stabs a superb return winner past Osaka before she can sort her feet.

    Konta just a game away.

  8. Edmund facing a big testpublished at 01:17 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2017

    Edmund 2-6 3-4 Carreno Busta*

Kyle Edmund has been broken again and will have to do what Dan Evans did yesterday against Marin Cilic if he is to win, namely come back from a set and a break down.

Has he got what it takes?

    Konta 6-4 4-2 *Osaka

Over the way on Margaret Court, Karolina Pliskova - another contender for the title - has laid down a marker with a 6-0 6-2 dispatching of Anna Blinkova.

But this display - against a much higher-ranked opponent - is no less impressive.

Johanna Konta whisks away another service game to love.

She is landing with 72% of first serves and winning 90% of points behind that shot.

    *Konta 6-4 3-2 Osaka

Naomi Osaka stems the flow of games against her.

But it will take a tanker-sized turnaround for her, rather than Konta, to be lining up in the third round.

The winner of this one will play either former world number one Caroline Wozniacki or Croatian world number 99 Donna Vekic.

Johanna Konta consolidates the break with a hold. This is very tidy tennis.

    Edmund 2-6 2-1 Carreno Busta*

Edmund is playing better in this second set. He had a chance to break Carreno Busta before the Spaniard came through to hold his first service game, but then wins his own service game to love after a couple of errors from his opponent.

    *Konta 6-4 2-1 Osaka

Konta has opened up the engine and roared clear.

One delicious off-forehand lands to take her 0-30 clear, before she sets up three break points.

Osaka dumps into the net to concede the first.

Eight points in a row for Konta. Osaka might by holed below the water line.

Konta keeps pace with a hold of her own.

Actually it was a full size six to the pedal. A hold to love.

Naomi Osaka keeps her chin up and gets the first game of the second set nailed next to her name on the board.

    Konta 6-4 Osaka

Johanna Konta has been very steady. She's served well, moved well and is very disciplined. She's moved Osaka around the court and coped with the pace that Osaka generates, and any time the ball is short she's on to it very quickly to get the upper hand in the rallies.

  17. Game and first set Kontapublished at 00:54 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2017

    Konta 6-4 Osaka

That is just about Johanna Konta's last 18 months in a nutshell.

Clinically cool in the head, precise as you like off the strings.

Naomi Osaka has had a decent heave in that first set, but the Briton has soaked up the best that she has got and picked her off when the chance showed itself.

    Edmund 2-6 Carreno Busta

The 30th seed Pablo Carreno Busta has the first set in his hands, clinching a fairly routine hold when Edmund makes an error with his forehand. The young Briton will need to get his best weapon working better in the second set.

    *Konta 5-4 Osaka

How much was that missed opportunity in the previous game playing on Naomi Osaka's mind?

A bit. The Melbourne sun was blazing straight down her optic nerve as well though.

Difficult to serve and Konta takes full advantage pouching the first break of the match.

The Briton serves for the opener next.

  20. Konta saves break point, holdspublished at 00:46 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2017

    Konta 4-4 *Osaka

Naomi Osaka doesn't just throw the kitchen sink into her groundstrokes. The white goods, bread bin and bottle brush are also behind her forehand as she rips a return winner to take the game to deuce.

Konta plonks long down the line. Break point Osaka - her first of the match.

First serve missed by Konta. The second is a bit of a patsy. Osaka pounces..but whips her forehand long.

Off the hook. Konta slides another side-winding ace past Osaka from the deuce court - she is having plenty of success with that shot - and peppers the tee on the next point to seal the game.

    Phew.
