Nadal beckons the ball boy over - grabbing a couple as he prepares to get this fourth set rock'n'rolling. Think of this as a new non-Slam match Rafa. You've got to beat Federer in straight sets....

Nadal has to come back and do it the hard way. He has beaten Federer 23 times before, but he's never beaten him from two sets down.

    Federer 6-4 3-6 6-1 Nadal

What's Federer got up his sleeve? An ace, that's what. It brings up set point - and a gentle reminder to the crowd not to interrupt the players - before a backhand volley gives Federer the set.

The crowd are on their feet, Nadal turns and marches back to his chair to guzzle some orange juice, while Federer takes a breather.

An instant challenge from Federer - you get a feel for these things after 17 Grand Slams - takes it to 15-15, before Nadal slams his forehand wide.

Federer gifts Nadal a break back point with a double fault, but Federer darts around as quick as you like to unfurl a forehand. Deuce.

Great return by Federer with that cross-court backhand. There was nothing wrong with that serve by any means. I wonder if Rafa is going to bother with this third set now.

A drop shot goes wrong for Federer and then Rafa has him on the run. Up and down Federer races, managing to sneak that forehand in before Nadal puts a bit of extra spin on it and the Swiss nets.

Nadal's not happy though as he overworks his forehand twice, and Federer has a little wave of his fist as it goes to 30-40. A big breath from Federer, a stonker of a backhand comes Nadal's way and the Spaniard has no reply. Fed will serve for the third set.

It's almost impossible to expect Roger to play at this level for five sets - especially when it is only his second tournament back. And you could say same for Rafa.

Rafa is just struggling on some of these shots. He's going through a little patch where he's struggling with his movement, whether he is tired or Roger is hitting the ball cleanly, I'm not sure.

But he will keep hanging in there.

Someone's popped the question in the crowd! There's plenty of cheering and grinning around the Rod Laver Arena. She's said yes! Congrats.

Federer picks up where he left off by racing through his service game. Rafa lets out an almighty grunt as he thinks he's beaten Federer with a backhand, but no. Federer's to it, placing it behind Nadal to hold his serve.

One minute 25 seconds, that took. No messing around.

Federer glanced straight up at the scoreboard then - the last couple of games have been so long I'm not sure he knew what the score was!

This game can't make it's mind up. First it's Federer with the advantage, but a stonker of a serve from Nadal, 196 km/h, saves it. Then Nadal leaps into the lead but Federer's forehand takes it back to deuce.

Ooft! Stunning from Rafa, a hammered backhand winner that Fed can't get near. Nadal darts to the net, he dinks it over, and he's saved the break points. Ridiculous.

    Federer 6-4 3-6 3-0 Nadal*

Nadal goes through his routine, the sweat still dripping off his forehead. He's irked to say the least, gesturing furiously as a backhand sails into the net. Here comes a rally, and it goes Federer's way, Nadal sprawling and already walking away as Federer skips into a forehand volley.

An excellent fightback from Rafa though, twice forcing Federer to over hit. He'll save two break points and it's deuce.

laughsandlife: Sensational forehand down the line from Federer! Enough to put anyone off their stride! Fantastic break.

Vieira151: It's heartening to see Federer doing his best not to let fear take over him. Going for the appropriate shots too, usually.

Dan Rawlinson: The momentum is shifting twice per game here. It feels like 2008 all over again and it's brilliant.

Up to the net comes Federer and there goes that little volley, Nadal only able to watch it sail by him. Back to back aces come crashing down towards either corner of the court, and as quick as you can blink, that's that. A simple hold for Federer and his box are on their feet to applaud him.

Roger held off break points then breaks Rafa in the next game, it's funny how that happens. Rafa has been in control of this match since early in the second set - up until this last minute.

Have that. A glorious exhibition from Federer, first a forehand that goes sailing past Nadal before a forehand down the line gets the crowd clapping and the commentator's oohing. Lovely stuff.

Nadal can't push Federer back and there's a fist bump and a "come on!" from the Swiss as Nadal nets. First break, Federer.
