This game has gone skew whiff for Federer. He's gone from 40-0 to deuce three times, a spate of bad misses landing him in trouble. Back to back aces sort him out before Federer finally gets the advantage with a swirling backhand. Nadal nets, and Federer will hold his serve - but it wasn't easy.

A change of shirt and a slurp of water for both fellas, and it's Federer to serve. Down come back to back aces and Federer races to 40-0, before a forehand winner gets Nadal on the board.
Federer overcooks a forehand before he darts up to the net and hits it! Deuce, and Rafa gets the advantage as Federer's backhand finds the net. The Swiss tidies up with an ace though. Back to 40-40.

Parity. Rafa Nadal levels things up. Roger's famed backhand lets him down at 0-30, teeing up three set points for Nadal. And the Spaniard takes the first one, a loose forehand from Fed sealing the set.

This is the biggest test Rafa has had for many, many months, right here, right now. He does his routines for a reason. It's to calm his system down. They stay whether it's the first point of the match or he's serving for the second set.

Nadal draws first blood, Federer levelling at 15-15 when the ball pings off the edge of Nadal's racquet and off court. That's bothering Jill in Row A rather than Roger.
Federer edges ahead at 30-15 when Rafa slaps ball into net, a pair of Swiss winners seeing him home.
Rafa to serve for the second set...

Choo choo! Rafa is back on track. The Spanish ninth seed holds his serve without any resistance from Federer, marching off to his chair knowing he is one game away from levelling this final.

Federer shifts the pressure back on to Rafa, racing into a 40-0 lead, a double fault offering a minor blip, before a forehand winner reduces the deficit further.

Nadal's perspiration continues to flood Laver's blue acrylic. One lucky ballboy summoned to mop up the mess. He could probably make a fortune from that on an internet auction.

It's only one break now and you can see how quickly that can disappear with the high flowing shots of Federer. Rafa can't ease up. Federer is a shot maker and they keep flowing. Rafa is a different proposition but with a real shot maker at the other end, you're never safe.

Some players could be tempted to throwing the towel in this second set, writing it off as a dud, preserving some energy to race out of the third-set blocks.
Not Roger Federer. He wins a break point with a wonderful forehand, repeating the trick from the baseline to take the game.

The forehand is what goes off when Roger's struggling. He really gave that game to Rafa, who is getting those returns back.

Wow. Federer is already struggling on his own serve, trailing 0-30, when Rafa hits a ripper of a double-handed backhand down the line.
Three break points...
One slips by the wayside when Rafa miscues a forehand, the second also wasted by the Spaniard. Then Federer buckles, cracking a forehand into the net.
This second set is disappearing into the sunset for Federer.

An overhead smash gives Federer another chance of breaking back instantly. However, that opportunity is also washed away down the drain by Nadal, the Spaniard again trying to blast Federer off court. The Swiss finally wilts, Rafa coming through to hold. Nadal seemingly starting to play the game on his own terms now.

But the Swiss goes long with a forehand from the baseline, Nadal watching the ball land a good foot past the whitewash.
Rafa turns up the heat in deuce, cooking Fed with more power, but he can't see the game through. On we go...

That was absolutely what Rafa wanted. He got his racquet on the first serve and then bullied Federer. There was a lot of intensity and he got into the point.

Federer swats away the first break point - but not the second. For the first time in a long while we see the Federer serve breached, a backhand into the tape giving Nadal the advantage early in the second set. Nadal clenches his teeth and his fists. He's happy.
