That was very impressive and extremely encouraging, not only the way he won the match but also the way he battled through that first set, so a fantastic effort physically and mentally.

Britain's Andy Murray after his7-6 (10-8) 7-5 6-0 win: "Whoever won that first set had big momentum. It's slow and heavy and coming back in these conditions is difficult.

"I thought I played some good tennis toward the end and I expected a tough match.

"It was tough. I think he was playing much better than me in the first set. Both of us hand some chances in the first set, the second set was the same. Both those sets could have gone either way."

Andy Murray is not playing Rafa Nadal tennis - the Spaniard looks head and shoulders above the rest - but it's starting to come together.

Forehand into the net from Del Potro and it's advantage Murray - but his forehand is wild and Murray swishes the racquet above his head in annoyance.

Ah! That's lovely from Murray, reaching Del Potro's little tonk over the net and thudding it beyond him. Second match point!

Ooft! A forehand from Murray finds the line and even draws a smile from Lendl as his charge saves the first break point.

Murray spins his racquet before running to the net at the last second and tapping the ball over with plenty of spin. Deuce!

The first strike goes to Del Potro with a dinky overhead, before he wins another battle at the back with a tidy backhand drop shot.

That's ferocious from Murray! He meets Del Potro's backhand down the line and hammers the ball right into the corner of the court. That's two break points to Del Potro, though, as Murray returns into the net.

Furious from Murray, just dancing forward and slamming a forehand beyond Del Potro's despairing drive, before Del Potro responds with a jig forward and a forehand of his own.

Lendl is as inscrutable as ever as he watches on from the box, the pressure on Murray's opponent now. Another lovely lob from Murray, and Del Potro can only flap at fresh air.

Murray will be serving for the match, and a place in the last 16.

This should be the end of the story for Del Potro. The confidence is starting to flow from Murray now.

Del Potro has spent a lot of time today running towards the net and watching the ball drop right in front of his nose.

Murray is on the move now, whacking forehands with abandon, and Del Potro can't keep up. A bit of a wobble from Murray on serve but he recovers swiftly, drawing a forehand error out of Del Potro.

Davis Cup captain Leon Smith has had a busy day, with mixed fortunes so far, having started with Kyle Edmund on Court Two before making the very short walk through the multitudes to Chatrier.

He's in row two of the Team Murray bench, with coaches Ivan Lendl and Jamie Delgado, plus fitness squad Matt Little and Mark Bender, in the front-row firing line. Exuding positivity is their task.

This could be a case of famous last words but it feels like Del Potro is fading now.

Murray whirs to three break points solely through his forehand, beating a sprawling Del Potro for pace at either side of the court, before a winner wraps up the game. He's speeding along now.

When it doesn't go your way... a bobble off the net from Del Potro drops onto his side, just after he'd lashed a forehand long.

He finally gets on the board when Murray blips on a return but, despite a bit of trouble getting his balance to serve, it's a straightforward hold for Murray.

Having quite a tough draw has been good for Andy and he's setting himself up for a very good tournament. He's never beaten Del Potro in straight sets though.

Murray does play that lob to brilliant effect and he somehow manages to get racquet on a 115mph forehand from Del Potro. Del Potro's not letting him have it, though, and slaps the ball back furiously.

Two break points for Murray come quickly, just as they did in the second set, and there's a yell of annoyance from the Brit as he hands one back with a forehand error.

That's out from Del Potro though, too much fire behind the forehand, and the early break goes to Murray.

Del Potro has only won once from being two set downs in 15 attempts - and Murray has only ever lost once from two sets up in a Grand Slam.

Murray might be two sets up but there's still plenty of interest in events on Chatrier, where Del Potro is very much the crowd favourite. Years of injury problems, an exciting game and generally being a nice bloke make him the fans' favourite wherever he goes. Unless he's playing Roger Federer.
