So today wasn't quite the day we were expecting due to an afternoon wrecked by rain but as a result we have quite a day coming up tomorrow.

Four men's quarter-finals and two women's on a blockbuster Wednesday in Paris.

Jelena Ostapenko hit 38 winners in that match, compared to Caroline Wozniacki's six.

She had never made it into the second round of a Grand Slam before this tournament and came to Paris unseeded.

I think we may hear a lot more from her in the future, never mind this week.

Ostapenko will now face Timea Bacsinszky in the last four of Roland Garros on Thursday, which is also her 20th birthday.

"It will be really great to play here especially when it is my 20th birthday," she says. "I hope I can enjoy it."

In a remarkable twist Thursday is also 28th Bacsinszky's birthday.

One of them will have the perfect present - a place in their first Grand Slam final.

It's no great surprise but both losers troop off with faces like thunder, Wozniacki storming to the exit on Lenglen and Mladenovic heading off Chatrier in similar fashion. There are a few boos around the main stadium as it becomes apparent to those hardy souls who have stuck around that Rafael Nadal will not be strolling out in the gloom for his quarter-final. Although apparently they will be getting their money back, which raises spirits a bit.

Jelena Ostapenko is beaming courtside after her win as she speaks to Fabrice Santoro in her TV interview.

"I'm really happy, I can't believe it," she says.

"I love playing here. It was tough because we had to go away two times from the court.

"Caroline is a tough opponent, I knew I had to stay aggressive, I lost it sometimes but I found my game."

That is some performance from NINETEEN year-old Jelena Ostapenko.

First the wind, then the rain delays, plus the fact she was playing Caroline Wozniacki, a former world number one and big favourite for the match.

She came through all of that though and is Latvia's first semi-finalist at Roland Garros.

Unbelievable. Jelena Ostapenko is playing a former world number one in her first Grand Slam quarter-final. She doesn't even look slightly fazed. In fact she has improved as this has got to the business end.

She cruises to 40-0 and now has three match points...

The ball is flying off the Ostapenko racket at the moment. Wozniacki doesn't seem able to deal with the power from the 19-year-old Latvian.

Bang, bang, bang. More big hitting and that's the game! No sign of nerves at all. Teenager Jelena Ostapenko will now serve for a place in her first Grand Slam semi-final.

Wozniacki has been there, done it and got several T-shirts. But it is the former world number one who is feeling the pressure.

Perhaps all the experience in the world is not always the substitute for youthful exhuburance.

Teenager Ostapenko, who - incidentally - has won all three of their previous meetings, breaks the 26-year-old Dane's serve at a crucial point on this decider.

Under pressure Mladenovic plays a perfect drop shot that stops dead in the red dirt to bring up break point.

But Bacsinszky saves it and then plays a fine point to set up her first match point...

The crowd are doing everything they can to get their player through but Mladenovic looks shaky.

Mladenovic must win this game to stay in her home Grand Slam.

She makes the perfect start, first winning a point with a drive volley and then Bacsinszky goes long.

Huge cheers from the home fans. No niceties here. 0-30.

Jelena Ostapenko appears to be pretty nerveless. After a shaky start to her first Grand Slam quarter-final, the Latvian teenager has settled down and not let these rain delays ruin her rhythm.

She races into a 40-0 lead and looks set for a comfortable hold.

Ah. We've jinxed her.

Two unforced errors - taking her to a whopping 46 during this match - wipe out that lead, before she digs deep to hold.

Mladenovic plays her best point since the rain delay, finishing with a forehand winner after some big hitting but she is still not happy.

She angrily bounces the ball into the ground and glares at her box. The French number one does what she has to do though and wins the game a couple of points later.

Have we got just the two games left in this one or are we just half way through? Timea Bacsinszky restarts this match leading by a set and a break.

Once again the crowd are getting behind the French player.

Gasps from the locals. At 30-30, Mladenovic works an opening but nets with a short forehand. Bacsinszky is looping the ball in. Sensible stuff. She is a game away from a second French Open semi-final.
