"The kid has a backhand!" says an American voice.

The backhand down the line over the high part of the net is supposed to be one of the hardest shots in the game - but not if you're Dominic Thiem. Two absolutely stunning winners have the crowd on their feet.

Djokovic needs a bit of help and he gets it from the from the Lenglen crowd - "Allez Djoko!"

Serve and volley from Djokovic. That's different but does the job. Deuce.

Again Thiem finds the line! He can do no wrong at the moment.

Another error from Djokovic. Thiem breaks. Is he going to do this?!

Anyone writing off Djokovic yet? Probably quite a few of you. However... the 12-time Grand Slam champion has battled back from two-sets down to win on FOUR previous occasions.

And the Serb has quite a record in Slam five-setters, winning 26 of his matches that have gone the distance. Only Pete Sampras (29) has won more, with Lleyton Hewitt (26) on the same number.

Has that changed your mind? A little bit?

We built this match up as a big one and so far it is delivering.

The Thiem backhand looks unbeatable at the moment as the Austrian hits another winner.

Is this a change of tactic from Djokovic? Two drop shots in a row. We haven't seen much of that.

The world number two shakes his fist towards the crowd, trying to get some support.

Djokovic fights off a break point but a sensational drop shot from Thiem means the Austrian has another chance to break...

Double fault. First sign of serves.

Still, Thiem has another opportunity and takes it!

He leads Novak Djokovic by two sets to love.

Wow, Dominic Thiem is playing well.

Djokovic has looked iffy at times but he can do nothing with that. The Serb plays a good return but Thiem hammers a backhand winner. 30-0.

He does the same again! Another backhand winner. Two set points Thiem...

Thiem doesn't really look too interested in this game. He knows he has another to come on his own serve next.

Djokovic closes the gap to two games.

I may be feeling the tension but the coolest man in the house is Dominic Thiem.

With a 12-time Grand Slam champion sensing a break of serve at the other end, the Austrian plays three perfect points to hold.

Djokovic is now serving to stay in this set.

    Djokovic 6-7 (5-7) 2-4 Thiem*

The crowd sense this is a crucial moment. A hum goes around Lenglen as Djokovic gets to 15-30.

The Serb bounces on his feet at the back of the court. He can do little with that, an accurate serve followed by a big forehand.

This time Thiem goes long. Break point Djokovic.

The rhythmic clap comes from the crowd. Tense.

Djokovic looks to be settling back into this again.

He holds serve and skips around the back of the court and into his position to receive. Is this where he focuses and gets back on terms?

  13. Error-count hurting Djokovicpublished at 11:55 British Summer Time 7 June 2017

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

The Thiem backhand has a Wawrinka-esque effect on the crowd, provoking awed gasps as he crunches it down the line. Djokovic has made 23 errors to Thiem's 21, but just 14 winners to 27. The Serb's game is about racking up the pressure with relentless precision, and that is eluding him right now.

He needs some some inspiration from the bench, where brother Marko and meditation guru Pep Imaz are taking the reins in the absence of Andre Agassi. I saw Pepe out jogging the other day in his white tracksuit. Not fast, but faster than me.

Dominic Thiem is not put off by Djokovic getting his name on the board.

He is now at +5 on the winners to unforced errors count whereas Djokovic is at -10. Djoko needs to turn that around sharpish if he is going to get back into this.

It seems like Djokovic is struggling to pick Thiem at the moment. Like a batsman not reading a leg spinner's googly.

Already in this set the Austrian has seven winners, compared to none from Djokovic.

He takes another game. Are the alarm bells starting to ring?

He can't seal the game though as he again drops too short and Thiem pounces again, booming a couple of forehands.

Another unforced error from Novak, his 21st of the match, brings up a second break point for Thiem...
