The two backhands into the net in the tie-break are exactly the kind of point Djokovic was not losing a year ago. There's plenty left in this one though as neither man can get a foothold on serve. Team Djokovic will be happy to see conditions brightening up - for now - as their man will appreciate a faster ball, so he can use the pace.

The wind is getting up on Lenglen. Like yesterday it is lifting the clay up into both players eyes.

Djokovic looks comfortable at 30-0 but Thiem picks off a drop shot and then Djoko puts a backhand in the net. 30-30.

Thiem goes long a point later but Djokovic then does the same. Deuce.

And a double fault from Djokovic! Break point Thiem...

A clench of the fist. No signs of dropping off at the start of the second set from world number seven Thiem.

He takes the game. I'm putting my cards on the table early, I reckon this one is going the distance.

What a first set that was. 73 minutes long and it is Dominic Thiem who takes it, just the second set he has ever won against Novak Djokovic.

The defending champion has been behind once in this tournament. How will he respond today?

Win these two points on serve and you've got the set, Dominic.

    *Djokovic 6-6 (4-4) Thiem

Djokovic is looking to attack Thiem's single-handed backhand, much like he does to Roger Federer.

It works, a backhand down the line is wayward from the Austrian.

Silence falls as Thiem serves after the changeover. He lands his first serve, then attacks the Djokovic backhand. The Serb plants a double-handed backhand into the net chord.

    We have a hold!

Six points played. All against the serve.

How often do you see that?

Lenglen is packed now. The conditions aren't allowing for great quality at the moment but the locals are being treated to a real battle.

Better from 23-year-old Dominic Thiem. Djokovic loses his balance in the wind again and the Austrian capitalises with a series of big forehands. Back on serve.

    Djokovic 6-6 (0-1) Thiem*

Djokovic kicks off the tie-break. First serve... net. Second serve... out wide, Thiem responds, Djoko balloons a return. Thiem can't punish him at first, but then he does with a punishing forehand that Djoko can't return.

Early advantage for the Austrian. Can he build on that?

    *Djokovic 6-6 Thiem

Novak Djokovic has a wry smile on his face as Thiem finds the line with a forehand. I'm not sure why it was just a good shot, Novak.

The Serb then has his arms outstretched as he nets to give Thiem the game.

Tie-break it is. For the record, Djokovic has lost four tie-breaks this year, Thiem seven.

Word reaches the Lenglen media seats that Nadal is through after Carreno Busta's retirement. "That's even quicker than I thought he would win," says one joker. Meanwhile, Nadal's prospective semi-final opponents are past the hour mark and still in the first set. It's all working out pretty well for Nadal right now.

    Nadal 6-2 2-0 Carreno Busta

We're sure Rafa Nadal would have liked to have gone through having won a full match, but you don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Is that just a Yorkshire idiom? Not sure.

Whatever the Spanish equivalent, then, yeah, that, Rafa. It's another gift.

The nine-time champion is through after only 50 minutes on court today. To be fair, he wasn't on much longer when he battered third-round opponent Nikoloz Basilashvili...
