    Konta 1-1 Krunic*

Jo Konta gets of the mark without too much fuss, starting with an ace and a forehand winner. The seventh seed is left flat-footed by a baseline return from Krunic, which lands inside the line near her right trainer, for 30-15 before Konta sees out the hold.

    *Konta 0-1 Krunic

Early nerves are apparent as Krunic produces an early double fault, although the Serb recovers well to hold when Konta whacks a cross-court backhand into the tramlines.

There are a couple of moments in the opener where the Brit, including the game-winning point, is left flummoxed by the height of the ball bounce. It kicks up like a bouncy ball on a school playground.

Krunic makes an incredible amount of balls, she's very, very quick. It's interesting that she and Novak Djokovic are both Serbs because they move in a similar manner.

Here we go then. Interestingly Jo Konta won the toss but elected to receive first. She clearly wants to get all over the diminutive Serb's serve from the first ball.

The locals have just seen American Steve Johnson win on Grandstand Court, which explains the smattering of spectators as the players knock up and the enormous snaking queue for coffee outside. It's still cool, still a little blustery, but the high stands of this relatively new show court mean conditions should be calm enough. Ed Sheeran booms out across the stadium, inevitably, and Britain's number one is ready to start what she expects to be "a battle".

    Konta v Krunic

There are more empty blue seats in the Grandstand court than there are people as Jo Konta arrives on court. But those who are there give the Briton a rousing reception.

Konta has never played Aleksandra Krunic, who is ranked 78th in the world.

  8. Muguruza & Kvitova throughpublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 28 August 2017

Jo Konta is hoping to follow a couple of other big names in reaching the second round without much fuss.

Garbine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova, who both know how to win a Grand Slam, are already through today.

Muguruza, the reigning WImbledon champion, won 6-0 6-3 against American Varvara Lepchenko as she aims to progress past the third round at Flushing Meadows for the first time.

Meanwhile, Kvitova beat Serbia's former world number one Jelena Jankovic 7-5 7-5.

Not only is Steve Johnson's win of interest to British tennis fans because it means Jo Konta will be in action shortly, but it also means we know the identity of Kyle Edmund's next opponent.

Another tough match for the British number two, although he knows he has got the beating of the American.

Edmund won in three sets against Johnson at Winston Salem last week.

Steve Johnson can't take his first match point in the third set breaker, but makes no mistake with the second as he serves out for victory.

Johnson, ranked 46th in the world, broke down in tears at the French Open when he beat Borna Coric just weeks after the death of his father and coach Steve Snr and he looks emotional again as he celebrates victory in his home Slam.

Seventh seed Johanna Konta is due on Grandstand court after home player Steve Johnson's match against Spain's Nicolas Almagro is over. Johnson is currently two sets up and has a mini-break in the third set tie-break. So this could be over before you've had time to make a brew.

    Edmund 6-3 7-5 6-3 Haase

British number two Kyle Edmund, speaking to Eurosport, after his comfortable first-round win: "Last year I had no pressure because I was playing Richard Gasquet, today I was playing a seed but it was different. You want to do well yourself.

"I managed my game well. I would have liked to have been more solid, but I saved break points. Overall to come and win in three straight sets against a guy like Haase, I am pleased with it.

"I was very tired this morning, I have played a lot of matches, this is my eighth in 10 days. I woke up very tired. My coach said today is not about tactics, it's about mentality.

"I had to drink a can of cola to get my sugar up, but then I started to get into the match."

A great day's work. Kyle Edmund - the natural heir to Andy 'King of British Tennis' Murray's throne - opens his US Open campaign with a superb win.

The world number 42 doesn't even need a second hold as Robin Haase, the Dutch 32nd seed, coughs up another break in the match-winning game. Not only that, he doubles faults on match point.

Not Haase's day. But that was because Edmund was aggressive and always on the front foot.

British number five Cameron Norrie on his maiden Grand Slam win: "I was really nervous this morning so I just had to tough out the first set and I relaxed a bit in the second. I'm stoked to be through and in the second round.

"I knew I had been playing well, there were a lot of long rallies towards the end of that first set but I stuck to what I knew and sneaked over the line. Then I kept focused in the second set and unfortunately he had to retire with injury."

On how he will celebrate tonight: "I might have a couple of brews tonight to enjoy it! Nah, I'll stay focused and prepare for Wednesday.

One in, one out. Although Kyle Edmund looks odds-on to join Cameron Norrie in round two, not Heather Watson at Terminal Two at JFK.

Edmund is showing why he is rated as having one of the best forehands in the game, certainly outside of the top 10, by clobbering his 15th winner of the match on that wing on his way to a 4-2 lead.

Two more holds it is then.
