    Federer 6-4 6-4 7-6 (7-4) Struff

    Now this is interesting.

Roger Federer is asked whether he requested a night match, in order to avoid the brutal temperatures in Melbourne.

"I'm one of 60 guys asking. Do I have more sway? Possibly. But it's not my call. There are other guys they are going to listen to. Maybe it was because of TV? I'm glad I didn't have to go from night to day. I wouldn't mind playing in the day, though. If you're at the top you've got to be able to play in all conditions."

Federer will now play Richard Gasquet in the third round.

"He's got one of the best double-handed backhands in the game - the best in history maybe - I love playing the guy. We've had good matches over the years. He's beaten me on clay and it's a good match up. I expect it to be tough again."

Gasquet has won two of their 18 meetings, FYI.

  4. Federer speaks highly of Struffpublished at 12:40 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2018

    Federer 6-4 6-4 7-6 (7-4) Struff

Roger Federer speaking on court: "I've practiced with him (Struff), and played against him in doubles and singles. You know he can serve 215 or 220 for five hours so that's what you have to be ready for. I had to protect my own serve and get the break with a good defence.

"It wasn't easy. There's an expectation on the underdog but it was a good match and I wish him the best for the season."

    *Federer 6-4 6-4 5-5 Struff

This must be nerve-wracking for Struff. Screw this game up and Federer will serve for the match.

The German misses a close-range volley by dropping it down into the net and he's 15-30.

And then the worse-timed double fault. Two break points for Roger Federer.

Both are fended off with decent winners. We continue from deuce...

  20. Crowd take to 'Struffy'published at 12:12 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2018

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport at Melbourne Park

    "Good stuff, Struffy!

    "Keep it up, Struffy!"

I'm surprised it's taken that long to find the German a nickname. He's giving the crowd their money's worth this evening, forcing Federer to produce some of his best to stay in control.

It remains a sticky evening inside Rod Laver Arena, so we might need to be peeled off our plastic seats if this one goes to five sets.
