Maximilian Poole: Federer broken! Great Struff.

Dorothy Darling: Can I blame Federer for missed deadlines? Perils of working from home. My desk chair spinning around faster than a Roger top spin forehand.

Yes, tennis is always a valid excuse.

    Federer 6-4 6-4 2-3 Struff*

Roger Federer was being very Roger Federer and racing through games in the first two sets.

Now, he's taking a bit more time and thought - and it's not really working. He throws away two points by hitting the net and going wide and soon Struff has another break point to play with.

An overhead smash can't be retrieved by the German so we go to deuce.

    *Federer 6-4 6-4 2-3 Struff

Jan-Lennard Struff adjusts his jaunty baseball cap. He looks annoyed after netting for 30-30.

It's OK, though. Federer totally skies a forehand.

A third double fault makes Struff angry again. After deuce, Federer has an intimidate break-back opportunity.

And with a fantastic backhand pick-up, Federer snatches a game back.

  5. Struff breakspublished at 12:01 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2018

    Federer 6-4 6-4 1-3 Struff*

It's not huge. Struff hits mega long to take us to deuce.

But wait - the German has another shot at the break after Federer nets.

And he's done it! Federer can't clear the net after a brutal forehand from Struff. A big moment for the world number 55.

    Federer 6-4 6-4 1-2 Struff*

A second serve ace takes Federer to 30-0.

For some reason, the Swiss tries to lob Struff, who at 6ft 5ins is always going to have the go-gadget arms to reach it. He does and swats down.

And all of a sudden, Struff has break point - his first of the match. This could be huge!

    *Federer 6-4 6-4 1-2 Struff

Make that two break points saved by Struff. A sweeping forehand does the job.

But yet again, a backhand error from the youngster gives Federer a third break point. That's saved by a booming ace - Struff's third of the match.

Now he has the advantage. Can he take it? Yep, he's pulled out another ace. A good recovery from the German.

Roger Federer starts to eat away at Struff's serve so the world number 55 takes a breather by grabbing a towel and wiping his brow.

At 30-30, the German nets and hands the defending champion a break point. He's converted one out of four so far.

Make that two from five. A big backhand gives Federer the game.

The yellow-clad 'Fanatics' here to support Aussie Ash Barty earlier are now trying to get a chorus of "Let's go Roger, let's go!" up and running. Bit cheeky. They've been joined by some French fans who are going through the entire routine of chants heard at Roland Garros. Quite magical.

Down below, Federer and Struff are providing some good entertainment, with the Swiss summoning a few rueful grins on his strolls between points as he tries to make the breakthrough in the second set.
