    Halep 6-3 6-2 Osaka

Solid, professional and with a sprinkling of stardust worthy of the world's best player.

Simona Halep is into the quarter-finals.

Osaka is playing shots now like she's finished. We all know it's never over in tennis - even at 6-3, 5-2 down. If her career is to progress she needs to realise that.

    Halep 6-3 5-2 Osaka*

Is this the game for Simona Halep? Osaka is loose behind her own serve.

    30-30.

If Osaka can learn to add heavier shots, more spin and an ability to mix it up more, she'll get better. Sometimes that comes with experience of playing matches.

    Halep 6-3 5-2 Osaka*

Crikey. Simona Halep is putting down a statement here. She's often thought of as a retriever, a clay court player, but she takes a high ball behind the baseline early on her forehand and it flashes past her 20-year-old opponent.

Halep is a game away from the quarter-finals after just over 75 minutes.

    *Halep 6-3 4-2 Osaka

A rare miss from Halep comes off the backhand side and she practices the shot two or three times afterwards. She'll want to get this one over and done with quickly after her marathon in round three.

    Winner from Osaka.

    Ace from Osaka.

This one has a little to run yet.

This is the cleanest match I've seen Halep play at this tournament. She looked slightly defensive in other matches - perhaps because she wanted to protect her ankle injury - but she looks great today.

    Halep 6-3 4-1 Osaka*

Simona Halep is closing in on a third Australian Open quarter-final. She takes her latest service game with little difficulty. She's leveled up in terms of winners now at 19 apiece.

  9. Thiem a break up in second setpublished at 07:19 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2018

    Thiem 2-6 4-3 Sandgren

Dominic Thiem is a break up in the second set against American Tennys Sandgren over on Hisense Arena.

But the fifth seed lost the first set of that last 16 meeting 6-2.

The winner will face either Novak Djokovic or Hyeon Chung in the quarter-final.

    *Halep 6-3 3-1 Osaka

Halep breaks again and guess where she wins the point. Yep, the net. Again.

Osaka is cutting a frustrated figure now. She screams a little as her shot hits the net.

    Halep 6-3 2-1 Osaka*

Again Halep wins a point with a high drive volley at the net. She was too passive early on put has changed that big time.

At deuce Osaka hits one of her best serves out wide to the Halep forehand and the world number one can't get it back in play. The crowd let out a big cheer. They're getting behind the Japanese player because that want more.

I'm not sure they're going to get their wish. Halep takes the next two points and has another break point.

So far Halep is moving well around the court and looking fresh. Her previous match doesn't look like it has affected her too much.

    Halep 6-3 2-1 Osaka*

Now then. Despite Halep looking on top at the moment, Osaka fashions herself an other opportunity to break...

But long she goes on the forehand again. The head rocks back in disappointment.

Halep waves a fist at her box as she closes out.

    *Halep 6-3 1-1 Osaka

Again Halep rushes in to claim a point with an aggressive drive volley. I'm not sure I have seen the world number one come to the net as often as in this match.

Now that's the shot of the match. From wide on her forehand side Halep slaps the ball bag crosscourt and the sprawling Osaka can't get there.

    Deuce.

  15. Halep breaks backpublished at 07:05 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2018

    *Halep 6-3 1-1 Osaka

What a response. That's how Simona Halep has got herself to world number one. No sign of panic and immediately she breaks straight back. It's a perfect mix of attack and defence. The Romanian hammers a return of serve one point and then just hangs in a point later, forcing Osaka to miss.

These two have met twice before and, despite Halep winning both, each time Naomi Osaka has won a set so she will know all is not lost.

Brilliant! Now she'll definitely know she has a chance! She brings up two break points and then does what she couldn't in the first set - she takes it.

Another shout of "come on," from the young Japanese player.

  17. Murray loses first setpublished at 06:58 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2018

    Murray/Chan 6-7 (8-10) Sanders/Polman

Jamie Murray and his partner Latisha Chan have gone a set down in their mixed doubles second round match against Storm Sanders and Marc Polmans.

The Australian pair took the opener 10-8 in a tie break.

That was very impressive form Halep. I have a feeling that she's in a great frame of mind. She has upped her aggression to combat Osaka.

    *Halep 6-3 0-0 Osaka

Osaka made all of the running early on in this match but she had five chances to break and didn't take any of them.

Halep had four break points and took two of them. That's the difference.

That was not easy. Halep caught the ball behind her, what incredible shoulder strength - she made it look easier than it was.
