If you're not hitting the exact shots from the very first ball, before you know it you're down.

But Cilic is hitting some nice heavy hits on Federer's backhand now.

Roger Federer's serve just gets better with age, the first a blistering, wrist-cracking number off the strings.

Ademolu: I think #Federer has an appointment in maybe an hour. At this rate this could be over in an hour and a half.

Jimmy: Everyone is playing Tennis. Roger Federer is playing Chess.

Obbbbbbby: At this rate the highlights programme could show the whole match and still be shortened :)

That brings us nicely to a plug for the highlights. Catch them on 13:00 GMT on BBC Two.

    *Federer 6-2 0-1 Cilic

Federer finds a way into the point off Cilic's second serve, moving his opponent around the court before the sixth seed drops a backhand short.

Cilic attacks off the next point though, and Federer goes high and wide in an attempt to loop a lob over the looming figure at the net.

    *Federer 5-2 Cilic

Punchy, aggressive and uncontrollable from Federer, who forces Cilic to go long.

But that's wonderful from the Croat, a superb passing forehand with Federer running towards the net - 30-15.

Roger doesn't want Cilic to settle and getting into some longer rallies will help Cilic settle.

    *Federer 5-2 Cilic

Federer miscues a backhand slice and it clips the net, dropping on his own side of the court.

His next backhand is short, too - that's the hold for Cilic.

Roger hasn't done an awful lot, to be honest. He just does what he does.

We can expect one unreturnable serve from Federer. That and is backhand are the things he's improved the most.

The Swiss follows his first ace of the match with a fierce second serve that Cilic can only coax back into the guts of the net.

    Federer holds.

    *Federer 4-1 Cilic

Not a bead of sweat on Roger Federer, he's only playing an Australian Open final in searing heat and humidity.

Marin Cilic, meanwhile, has already been through more towels than a launderette.

Federer cruises to 40-0 on his service game. This is punishing.

The roof might be closed but it’s still pretty toasty in Rod Laver Arena - hopefully Federer will ask for the air conditioning to be turned up for the spectators as he apparently did in his last match. We’re all living in Roger’s world here tonight, especially Cilic.

Well, Cilic hasn't got his eye in yet... he needs to find it quick.
