This time Edmund gets the drop shot right! And on his backhand side too, giving the Italian the eyes before slicing over the net to perfection.

The arms are outstretched, the head nodding in irony after Fognini whips a shot into the tape.

    Another one.

This time the British number leaps into it, no chance for Fognini on the baseline.

That's a top drawer forehand in response from Edmund, slapping it into the corner and beyond the rooted Italian - 15-15.

Kyle Edmund back pedals, staring into the sun, and manages to slice down an overhead half-volley... but Fabio Fognini keeps it alive, edges his way back into the point and then whips home a forehand winner.

That aforementioned group in tennis fancy dress (see 12:06 entry) have desperately been trying to get a Mexican Wave going inside Lenglen... and they've done it in the changeover.

If there's anything more fun than jumping in the air and flinging your hands skywards at a sporting event then I've yet to do it.

You know it is getting tense when Kyle Edmund is fist-pumping at his box. Coach Fredrik Rosengren is also on his feet, almost hanging over the edge as he gees his man on.

A third foot fault from Fabio Fognini. He smiles and pumps a fist in the direction of the line judge - after he's held serve, of course.

    He saves the second, too.

Galloping towards the net to leap into a thumping forehand with Edmund wrong-footed.

    Sharapova 6-2 6-1 Pliskova

That's it - 28th seed Maria Sharapova is through to the last 16 with a potential meeting with Serena Williams on the cards. The American 23-time major winner faces German Julia Goeges later.

Sixth seed Karolina Pliskova looked a shadow of the player that reached the last four last year, with the Russian picking off her serve easily.

"This was my match to win," said the winner. "I wanted to perform well and give myself a chance."

Edmund has wised up to that Fognini drop shot. He scrambles towards the net to meet the latest installment and sticks a backhand winner down.

Fognini hits back with a wide forehand followed by a volleyed winner.

A solid service game from Kyle Edmund, until Fabio Fognini swats a serve away like an irritating fly and it flings beyond the British number one.

    A brief blip. Edmund holds.

    *Edmund 3-6 6-4 6-3 4-6 1-2 Fognini

A little sniffle from Kyle Edmund, wiped away on his shoulder. A spin of his racquet and a bouncer of a second serve that Fabio Fognini can only send long in return.

    30-0.

Good stuff from the Italian, directing Edmund around the clay before the Yorkshireman is unable to muster a meaningful response. Fognini holds.

    Edmund 3-6 6-4 6-3 4-6 1-1 Fognini*

High, wide, not at all handsome from Fabio Fognini as he lofts a loose backhand off target.

Kyle Edmund pops a forehand long, and a Fognini ace makes it 30-15.

Thunderous from Kyle Edmund, a backhand that rattled the strings of Fabio Fognini.

And the British number one holds.

Kyle Edmund is the polar opposite to Fabio Fognini: cool, calm, structured.

But the Yorkshireman even looked tempted to lob his racquet at one point in that opening game.

As Novak Djokovic pointed out yesterday, hardly anybody in the world can control emotion in the heat of the battle.
