There's the textbook drop shot again, reeling Kyle Edmund into the net like a catch of the day and then tossing a volley beyond the stranded Brit.

The two-time champion has broken sixth seed Karolina Pliskova again.

She took the first set and now is looking good to wrap this up after slapping a return past the reach of her Czech opponent to take a 3-1 advantage.

Sharapova could face Serena Williams in the last 16 - now that would be interesting.

Fognini isn't impressed by successive line calls, but the clay tells the story... it doesn't stop the Italian gesturing towards the umpire.

    15-30.

Toilet/refreshment breaks done. It's been a gruelling battle so far.

Fabio Fognini will serve first in the decider as both players eye a place in the last 16.

We're going all the way! Not what the British fans inside Lenglen wanted, nor the Parisians who don't want to miss the decider but are getting lunchtime hunger pangs.

Unsurprisingly the Italian fans are lapping it up, particularly a group who are clad in 1980s tennis fancy dress. Long curly hair, facial hair, headbands and towels draped around their shoulders.

Those towels might come in handy seeing as they are sat in the scorching sun..

A good start, pulling Fabio Fognini this way and that before the 31-year-old pokes a forehand into the net.

Oh, hello. As if to shut me up, Fognini throws in another sliced drop like he's toying with Edmund down the local park.

    The Italian holds to love.

Neither of them can get the drop shots right at the minute. Fognini undercooks his so much it comes off the strings blue... Edmund holds.

Edmund tucking into the Fognini box of tricks there and pulling out a drop shot worthy of the Italian... but Fognini reads it, and Edmund's response is to try and loft a weak lob over his opponent.

    He fails. 30-30.

A late line call on the Kyle Edmund serve... just as he was sprinting in to meet a Fabio Fognini return on the full.

The Briton takes the point moments later with a passing forehand, but then lofts a backhand long.

Sharapova had three break points in the eighth game to take the set and managed to take the last of those courtesy of Karolina Pliskova's double fault.

The Russian - seeded 28 here - is a set away from a place in the last 16.

Kyle Edmund was suffering a bit of hay fever when he met the British media earlier this week. Itchy eyes and blocked nose are starting to affect me on Lenglen, let's hope those pollen particles don't get into his sinuses too.

Meanwhile, the ever-watchable Fognini flings his racquet into the canvas behind his baseline and decides to pinch the line judge's seat for a quick breather.
