    *Kvitova 6-1 2-3 Barty

Kvitova tries a bit of slicing of her own and spins her backhand over the baseline at 15-0.

A rushed forehand from the Czech finds the bottom of the net and, as Kvitova's backhand drops over the baseline, Barty holds to love.

"You've to fight for your right to.... BARRRR-TY!"

Ladies and gentleman, we have a winner from the rowdy home fans next door.

The Beastie Boys would be proud of their creativity.

    Shot!

Gorgeous from Kvitova, crouching low to send Barty's return of serve flying down the line.

Advantage to the Czech - and she wrongfoots Barty to seal the hold!

    *Kvitova 6-1 1-2 Barty

Another huge "pojd!" from Kvitova as she deals with Barty's slicing and dicing to get to 30-15 but she makes a meal of an attempted cross-court winner to bring Barty level.

Too much drift on a Barty backhand puts Kvitova within touching distance of a hold, but Barty eats into Kvitova's second serve for deuce.

    *Kvitova 6-1 1-2 Barty

That's a great passing shot from Barty, beating a full-stretch Kvitova, and she makes a terrific one-two punch on serve for a 30-15 lead.

Into the net goes Kvitova's return of serve, and a body serve wraps up a fine service game for Barty.

That was the first pressure Barty had imparted on Kvitova's serve.

    Kvitova 6-1 1-1 Barty*

What a strike that is from Kvitova, going straight at Barty, and the Australian gets enough racquet on the ball to force Kvitova into moving forward for a winner.

Advantage, Kvitova - sealed as she comes to the net and rushes Barty's backhand!

    *Kvitova 6-1 0-1 Barty

Ace number two from Petra Kvitova gives her the advantage.

She just misses a third, and then a block return from Barty draws the error out of Kvitova's forehand.

    40-40.

    *Kvitova 6-1 0-1 Barty

A double fault from Petra Kvitova is welcomed by the Australian crowd, but the Czech nails her next serve for 15-15.

Kvitova twice mishits on her backhand - the first one costs her, the second doesn't as an off-balance Barty nets.

What a shot that is though! Barty angles a demon of a return down the line and Kvitova, reaching, blocks the ball out. Break point to Barty.

Barty's difficult start hasn't dampened the enthusiasm of one group of home fans just next to the media seats.

There are about 20 of them, all wearing those aforementioned yellow 'Aussie!' tees, jumping to their feet and chanting after every game.

A rendition of “If you love Ash Barty, clap your hands!” after she gets on the scoreboard ends with much of Laver enthusiastically joining in at the end.

Better, much better from Ashleigh Barty.

She draws the errors out of Petra Kvitova's service returns, and an ace down the T wraps up a hold to 15.

It's an incredible performance. There's not much Barty could have done, really. She's just been forced on to the back foot.

Twelve winners, 11 unforced errors, 75% of net points won and 71% of points won on first serve.

Petra Kvitova is not messing around.

If Ash Barty can stay with her though, she should be able to entice a few more errors out of those big shots...
