I was watching earlier and Kvitova was practising by hitting a lot of her returns down the middle. She doesn't want to give Osaka an angle.

Both players seem very composed. You can't tell they are nervous. It's been good tennis so far.

    Kvitova 1-1 Osaka*

Petra Kvitova gets her own service game going with a big strike out wide.

She crunches a stunning backhand on to the baseline for 40-0 and then, with a big first serve, Kvitova notches a love hold.

Well, that's one way to make up for a double fault.

Naomi Osaka swings two huge first serves through Petra Kvitova's defences, but we go to 30-30 with a long cross-court backhand from Osaka.

A beauty down the line puts Osaka in front, and she holds as Kvitova works a forehand long.

Osaka's come an enormously long way in a very, very short time. She's within touching distance of becoming world number one. She only wins big titles. It was hugely impressive the way she was able to carry out the US Open final after everything that was going on. She didn't lose her focus at all and here she is in another Grand Slam final.

It's a game of firsts today.

This is the first time Petra Kvitova and Naomi Osaka have met on court.

Osaka is the first Japanese player to reach the Australian Open final and she's aiming to become the first Asian world number one.

Kvitova is into her first Slam hard-court final, and her first in Melbourne.

  18. Osaka is future of women's tennis - Davenportpublished at 08:28 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2019

    Kvitova v Osaka

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport at Melbourne Park

Three-time Grand Slam champion Lindsay Davenport, who won her final major in Melbourne in 2000, was one of the legends who stopped for a quick chat.

Naturally, the women's final was the first topic on the agenda.

"I think Osaka has an edge with her athleticism, her movement around the court and her explosiveness. Petra has cruised and not played anyone of Naomi’s level yet," the American said.

"Osaka served brilliantly against Pliskova and we’ll have to see if she can keep that up that kind of serving, if she can get one to two free points every game then it is going to be harder for Kvitova to dictate play.

"I think Osaka is going to win, I think she is the future of women’s tennis. Anyone can have a let down on any day but how she has been so composed and carried herself in this tournament I think she will get two in a row."

Petra Kvitova on Naomi Osaka: "Definitely I need to play my best tennis. I think Naomi is on fire. She's an aggressive player, which I am as well.

"I think it will be about who is going to take the first point and push the other a little bit."

Naomi Osaka's maiden Slam triumph was in the headlines for weeks afterwards - but not just because of the result.

Serena Williams' row with umpire Carlos Ramos was discussed constantly in the aftermath, and Osaka was reduced to tears while waiting to collect her trophy following boos from the crowd.

2018 was a breakthrough year for Osaka - she won Indian Wells to claim her first WTA-level title and broke into the top 10.

She went on a 10-match winning streak, starting in New York and ending in Tokyo, and finished the year as world number four.
