Classic Movies: Last summer, playing til 3 in the morning in a Challenger Series match & winning in 5. Everything else he did, this was the culmination of his grit, talent & determination. I'm not sure any other champ would have done what he did. And then those tears at the end.

  4. 'I'd like to stop playing at Wimbledon'published at 07:46 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2019

Andy Murray on his plans at the Australian Open: "I'm going to play. I can still play to a level. Not a level that I'm happy playing at. But it's not just that. The pain is too much really and I don't want to continue playing that way.

"During my training block [in Miami last month] I spoke to my team and told them I can't keep doing this. I needed to have an end point because I was sort of playing with no idea when the pain was going to stop.

"I said to my team, look I think I can get through this until Wimbledon. That's where I'd like to stop playing. But I'm also not certain I'm able to do that."

"He has also been blessed with two daughters and I think he's grown up with a really strong female role model with his mum and now his wife is also a strong character so he is surrounded by great, strong women.

"Honestly I can't imagine the sport without him. He has just been there all the time."

James Nicholson‏: I was so proud when Andy won those tournaments back to back at the end of the season, culminating with him winning the ATP finals against Djokovic to become world number 1. He seemed unbeatable and on the cusp of being able to dominate. Sadly his hip didn't allow it.

Nick Kyrgios on Instagram: "Andy, I know you take me for a joker most of the time, but at least hear me out on this one old friend. You will always be someone that impacted the sport in so many different ways, I know this was never the way you wanted to go out, but hey it was a heck of a ride.

"You took me under your wing as soon as I got on tour, and to this day you have been someone I literally just look forward to seeing. You are one crazy tennis player, miles better than me, but I just want you to know that today isn’t only a sad day for you and your team, it’s a sad day for the sport and for everyone you’ve had an impact on. Which leaves me big fella..

"These are a couple photos, that should make you smile and think, I was actually a little bit of a younger brother to you. Anyways, I just want you to know, and I’m sure you already do, everyone wants you to keep fighting and to keep being you. Good luck at the Australian Open Muzz, I’ll be behind you."

Fun fact: I was working in a deli when Andy Murray won his first Wimbledon title.

We had a sneaky radio in the back of the kitchen which we ended up huddled around as he eventually converted his fourth championship point.

Three hours and ten minutes of utter stress. Worth it, though.

Jason Harding‏: For me it has to be his first win at Wimbledon, not only was it a shock, he absolutely destroyed the invincible Novak at the time.

Andy Murray: "Obviously I've been struggling for a long time. I've been in a lot of pain for about 20 months now.

"I've pretty much done everything that I could to try and get my hip feeling better and it hasn't helped loads. I'm in a better place than I was six months ago but still in a lot of pain. It's been tough."

A quick reminder of Andy Murray's many achievements.

His two Wimbledon victories means he is the first British man to win more than one title at SW19 since Fred Perry in 1936.

His rise to the top of the rankings in 2016 made him the first British man to do so since the rankings were introduced in 1973.

He is the first male player to successfully defend an Olympic singles title and he went 11-0 in Davis Cup rubbers to help Great Britain win their first title since 1936.
