Kyle Edmund leaps into the air, hopping backwards like he's doing a drill on a sprint ladder. A roar of 'Come on!' and a fist clench so tight it could crack a nut.

Stifling hot inside the third showcourt at the Caja Magica by the way. I know the Spanish like it balmy, but someone turn down the heating please.

Edmund keeps his cool though, crunching the ball with that jackhammer of a forehand to back up the break.

    Edmund 5-2 Kohlschreiber*

30-15 - Kohlschreiber needs some WD 40 on that backhand.

    40-15.

A great second serve is too good for the German.

15-15 - Edmund loses only his second point on his first serve with a wild one from the tramlines.

What a game that was from Edmund! The pace he generates on forehand is pretty special. A really solid break and a great start to this first set.

    The German goes long.

"Your powers are weak, Kohlschreiber," thinks Edmund.

    Edmund 3-2 Kohlschreiber*

15-15 - interesting that Edmund read the kick from Kohlschreiber's ball there. A great return from the Brit.

    15-30 - Kohlschreiber's one-handed backhand lets him down. Hmmm.

  8. Russia beat Djokovic's Serbiapublished at 17:08 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2019

Are they the only two playing for Russia at this Davis Cup?

Khachanov and Rublev (and the others) will play Canada in Saturday's semis.

Edmund is flexing like a member of Gold's Gym.

    40-0.

A love hold too for Edmo.

    Intriguing.

    *Edmund 2-2 Kohlschreiber

It looks like Edmund's forehand v Kohlschreiber's backhand. The German is just about edging it.

    30-0.

    An easy hold for Kohlschreiber.

    Edmund 2-1 Kohlschreiber*

Edmund holds - that wasn't such a big test in the end.

    *Edmund 1-1 Kohlschreiber

The German produces two good returns.

We're at deuce. This is a big early test for Edmund.

    *Edmund 1-1 Kohlschreiber

    30-0.

But good slicing from the German baffles Edmund. The Brit can get into a rut when he faces a barrage of those - he needs to stay on top of his opponent.

Another good serve pulls the Brit up to 40-15.

    Edmund 1-0 Kohlschreiber*

What a backhand from Kohlschreiber - the shot surprises Edmo.

    We are back to deuce.

We were until the German double-faults...but no, the German's first challenge pays dividends. The ball just landed in.

  17. Postpublished at 16:54 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2019

    Edmund 1-0 Kohlschreiber*

A good deep serve pulls the German out of a spot of bother. That zipped.

    Deuce.

The German the goes long with a forehand after Edmund's return kicked up.

  18. Postpublished at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2019

    Edmund 1-0 Kohlschreiber*

The net. Edmund went for glory off his powerful forehand, but the cord got in the way.

    30s each.

30-40 after Kohlschreiber makes an error.

    Break point GB.

  19. Postpublished at 16:52 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2019

    Edmund 1-0 Kohlschreiber*

That's another double-handed backhand swipe that pays off.

    Blimey!

    30-15.

    What next fella?

    "I BELIEEEEEVE!"

One member of the depleted Stirling Uni Barmy Army launches a rallying call to start the traditional 'I Believe That We Will' chant, with a group of about 30 enthusiastic folk wearing Back The Brits t-shirts joining in.

And someone has found a drum today. Maybe they borrowed it off the Kazakhs who, of course, won't be needing it today...
