I think Serena prefers conditions a little quicker, not necessarily dry and dusty but where her serve can be effective. She's moving better now than she was. A damp, heavy clay court can be hard to move, that was the case for her early on.

Serena Williams races through her next game and this is beginning to look a very steep mountain for Kristie Ahn now.

Ahn played well in the first set. That's the killer. Her serve wasn't punished too much, she was able to dictate some of the points and still didn't come out with the set.

  4. Williams breakspublished at 15:41 British Summer Time 28 September 2020

    Ahn 6-7 (2-7) 0-1 Williams*

How much has that 74-minute losing opening set taken out of the mind and body of Kristie Ahn?

Serena breaks at the first available opportunity in the second set. From being a break down and her opponent serving for the set, to being a set and a break up. A very quick turnaround.

If Ahn can nick this set it will be interesting to see how Williams can respond. I've not seen much quality play, much aggressive play, from her.

    Ahn 5-5 Williams*

    David Law
BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra tennis commentator

This is so stressful for Serena Williams. I feel like it is an extreme version of what we saw with Andy Murray yesterday, someone battling age and raging against the end of their career - which is going to come. I find it captivating that she is trying to fight that.

I can imagine her career flashing before her eyes and how good she expects to be. And when these balls don't go in, she struggles to handle that.
