Williams looks relaxed but not necessarily engaged 100%. The conditions aren't great, it's not really fun out there, it's cold, not a big crowd, all these things pile in.

US Open champion Dominic Thiem eased into the French Open second round with a 6-4 6-3 6-3 win over Croatia's former world number three Marin Cilic.

The Austrian, 27, took the upper hand in the match when he broke in the ninth game on his way to a one-set lead.

Cilic, who made 39 unforced errors, was flustered by Thiem's defence, suffering two more breaks in the second set.

Two poor volleys in the sixth game of the third earned the two-time runner-up the crucial break en route to victory.

The third seed will play Reilly Opelka or his fellow American Jack Sock in the next round.

Williams' last service game was an epic one. This time it's more routine with a rapid hold to 15.

  4. 'Many breaks of serve'published at 14:49 British Summer Time 28 September 2020

    Ahn 3-1 Williams*

    Naomi Cavaday
BBC Radio 5 Live tennis commentator

Let's be honest, breaks of serve aren't going to mean particularly much in this match. Ahn is a good returner, there are heavy conditions which will slow down Williams and Ahn doesn't have biggest of serves. You imagine there will be many breaks of serve.

    Ahn 3-1 Williams*

Kristie Ahn does well to consolidate that break of serve and there is daylight between her and Williams.

Ahn is the American number 18, with 17 of her compatriots inside the top 100 in the world. If she wins this one then she'll probably be moving inside the top 100 too.

  6. Broady about to make main draw debutpublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 28 September 2020

    Vesely v Broady

We might have lost three Britons in the singles yesterday but there are still others to keep an eye on.

First up today, qualifier Liam Broady faces Czech world number 68 Jiri Vesely.

Their match on court 10 is about to get under way. We'll keep you posted on how it's going for the 26-year-old Brit, who is playing in the Roland Garros main draw for the first time.

A lovely drop shot from Kristie Ahn, which is definitely one for the highlights reel when played in super slo-mo, gives Ahn a game point. But not for long as it is at deuce. Another epic game incoming?

What a boost that is for Ahn. What an unusual game from Serena Williams. Three double faults and that forehand miss which she might rue.

Seventh seed Petrra Kvitova moved into the second round of the 2020 French Open as she beat France's Oceane Dodin 6-3 7-5 in the opening match of day two.

Kvitova, 30, a Roland Garros semi-finalist in 2012, broke Dodin's serve in the eighth game and did not drop a point on her own first serve in the opening set.

Dodin, 23, ranked 117th in the world, was cheered on by 1,000 fans at Court Philippe Chatrier with both players losing a service game early in the second set.

But the Czech Republic player got the decisive break in the 11th game before serving out for the match.

  11. Ahn breaks Williams' servepublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 28 September 2020

    *Ahn 2-1 Williams

Finally, at the sixth time of asking, Kristie Ahn gets the break of serve.

Serena Williams had been on the ropes and had to save five break points, but, after a lengthy rally, it goes Ahn's way and she gets a reward for her efforts.

Twenty minutes gone and only three games in the books.

Williams sounds like she has had enough of this game. A shake of the head too.

    Ahn 1-1 Williams*

The tally of break points missed is now up to five for Ahn in this marathon third game. This is a good serve from Williams and Ahn can't control the return.

Wait, now a sixth break point chance.

Williams has to be careful when attacking this backhand, if it doesn't have precision, Ahn has showed she is capable of turning it against Williams.

Serena lets out a huge scream as she moves to game point and finally get rid of this one. But a double fault then scuppers her earlier good work. Deuce again.

    Ahn 1-1 Williams*

A jumping backhand down the line from Ahn gives her her fourth break point opportunity. But, just like the previous three, she can't cant it.

This time the serve is a good one, Ahn again goes airbound with a jumping two-handed backhand but puts too much on it.

Serena has got the power but if she can find the accuracy against someone of Ahn's stature - who doesn't have the wingspan - she will get aces.

    Ahn 1-1 Williams*

An ace from Williams gives her a game point, but Ahn keeps it alive with a fine return from beyond the baseline. This takes the game to the seven-minute margin. Fans getting some good value for money early on in this one.

  19. 'Transition to clay with be difficult for Williams'published at 14:32 British Summer Time 28 September 2020

    Ahn 1-1 Williams*

    Miles Maclagan
Former British Davis Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

I think the transition to clay will be difficult for Serena Williams. She is 39, although I'm not that aware of her creeping up in age - her appearance hasn't changed much!

But when you're older the body is creaking more, she had an Achilles injury and had to manage a knee injury for a long time. That doesn't help.

In recent years she is so desperate for this 24th Slam it has put a whole load of extra pressure on her.

  20. Postpublished at 14:32 British Summer Time 28 September 2020

    Ahn 1-1 Williams*

A two-handed backhand down the line is too good and that's three break points saved from Williams.
