Six-time champion Serena Williams battled through a challenging three-set test against Greek 15th seed Maria Sakkari to reach the US Open quarter-finals.

Williams, 38, looked composed as she took the first set in 37 minutes.

The third seed lost a close tie-break in the second and was forced to find her best tennis to come from a break down in the third to win 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 almost two hours later.

"I just kept fighting," Williams said.

"She was doing so well. She was being so aggressive and I knew I needed to do the same thing."

Williams plays French world number 56 Alize Cornet or Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova - playing her first tournament since Wimbledon 2017 - next. The American is seeking a 24th Grand Slam singles title as she attempts to equal Margaret Court's record.

That was a real victory for Serena's determination and will. In the second set it felt so similar to the match 10 days ago when she lost to Sakkari, but she was not going to leave anything in the locker in the third set.

She dug in and found some inspiration. It's a massive win in terms of momentum. She's starting to play very well.

So Serena Williams stays on course for a 24th Grand Slam - and her seventh in New York.

Next up is either France's Alize Cornet or Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria in the quarter-finals.

Match winner Serena Williams says: "We're having fun. We're out here doing our best. Of course I thought about it [her match with Sakkari two weeks ago] but it's a completely different match scenario and moment.

"I just kept fighting. She was doing so well she was being so aggressive and I knew I needed to do the same thing. It's definitely less pressure. I miss the fans but this is different.

"It's also different because the breaks are a bit longer with the fans here and I could have used that a little bit in this match. There are some plusses and minuses but I love having the fans here so i definitely miss it.

"I'm definitely match fit I've gone a lot of three sets."

Serena would have closed out in the second set if she could have found the level she produced at the end of the third set.

She responded really well in the third set and ramped up the intensity, the footwork, the noise, everything you would expect when Serena has her back up against the wall.

This could be it. Three break points for Williams. She'll then be serving for the match if she takes one of the next three points.

Remember Sakkari is aiming to be the first Greek woman to get into a Grand Slam quarter-final. She is going to have dig deep in this game as she's 0-30 down on her serve.

Sakkari has been up the court, been aggressive, and yes she's flirted with the line a bit but it has been excellent from her.

She's been a little out of her comfort zone at times but she can do it at this level and just needs to get used to it.
