Matteo Berrettini picks up the first set after another mistake from Andy Murray under little pressure.

The Scot's game still has ricks and ruts as he works his way back to fitness.

Matteo Berrettini splatters a forehand across court, Murray can only find the net in response. 15-40 and two set points for the Italian.

Make that ten. Another 140mph-plus bruiser barrels through the service box to close out the game.

Even for a returner as good as Andy Murray it is difficult to crowbar his way into a service game as tight and tidy as that.

Andy Murray is potentially in set-losing sticky stuff at 15-30 down. The Scot dials in though with a patient series of groundstrokes, nagging away at a full length and drawing the mistake from Matteo Berrettini.

The big lad doesn't like being pinned at the baseline. Another error from the back. 40-30.

And Murray whips a superb winning forehand away, swinging the racquet around his head like a celebrating football fan's shirt.

Andy Murray brings up deuce with a touch as soft as eiderdown. A lovely drop-shot that makes Matteo Berrettini look like a lumbering oaf as he comes forward.

Berrettini has the last laugh though. The Italian cranks down a pair of exocet serves, popping like corn off a pan, to see out the game.

That game - that's just ring-rust.

When you are playing tournaments regularly, rarely do you see them hit two bad shots in a row, much less four like that.

Murray just needs to get some matches under his belt.

But at 30-40 Andy Murray pulls the trigger on a death-or-glory forehand down the line. He misses by a whisker. But a milimetre is as good as a mile in this game.

First break blood Berrettini....

Andy Murray is in some of the sticky stuff. He slips to 0-30 down. Matteo Berrettini puts up the cross-court lob. Murray can only clump the no-look backhand jump volley into the net.

0-40 and three break points to Berrettini.

Matteo Berrettini whistles thorough a service game in a little under two minutes, marching from one side of the service line to the other, unleashing a hail of vicious, steep-bouncing deliveries.

Ominous.

Andy Murray is chasing like fury, but cannot convert either break point chance as Matteo Berrettini's jumbo-sized serve gets him out of trouble.

The Italian is 6ft 5in tall. That's like Diego Schwartzman serving off a step ladder.

Oh wow.

That was 24-carat copper-bottomed Murray. The real deal. The Scot blurs across the back of the court to retrieve a Berrettini forehand that look destined for the backboards and pings a superb reply right on the Italian's toes.

Sublime stuff.

And now two break points Murray at 15-40.

It was a struggle though.

No easy opener. No gentle loosener. This is a high-wire game. Both players seems to sense that is going to be a tight one from the off.

Murray is knocked back from game point as he loses a cagey, conservative baseline exchange.

An early sign that Matteo Berrettini is going to test Murray's mobility as he dinks in a delicate dropper at 40-15 down.

Murray is out the blocks sharpish, but can't get there. Not sure even a full bore Murray would have reached that one to be honest. On a string like Virgil Tracy.

The winner of this one will play Dan Evans after the British number one beat Adrian Mannarino in straight sets in the last match on court.

Evans looked in terrific nick, lovely drop-shots, great hustle around the court.

A great stat from Sue Barker on BBC television coverage by the way just now. This is the first time that Andy Murray has played a top-10 player since beating Milos Raonic in the Wimbledon final of 2016.

Andy Murray broke down in his post-match on-court chat with John Inverdale after beating Paire.

Afterwards, he had time to explain why his emotions are running so high every time he sets foot on court.

"I'm always sort of telling myself - and maybe it's not the best mindset - but each match could be my last one, you know, that I play now," he said.

"I want to make the most of every match that I play and each tournament that I get the chance to compete in."
