  1. 'Nice injection of pace from Barty'published at 08:54 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    *Barty 6-0 2-0 Tsurenko

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

That was a really nice injection of pace from Barty. Tsurenko on the back foot.

Tsurenko now just overplaying it slightly.

The crowd is very pro-Barty but I think even they would like Tsurenko to get on the board here.

  2. Barty breaks early in second setpublished at 08:52 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    *Barty 6-0 2-0 Tsurenko

A break point for Barty, after picking up the pace on the forehand and forcing her opponent to go long.

Tsurenko folds weakly though with a double fault to gift Barty her eighth game in a row. This one could be over very soon.

  3. 'It sounds like Norrie doesn't feel he's ready'published at 08:47 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    Norrie 3-6 0-6 4-6 Korda

    Naomi Broady
British player on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's so important to get a good off-season. The tennis season is almost 11 months of the year.

A lot of players take a lot of confidence, so if Norrie feels like he hasn't done that - it sounds like he doesn't feel ready to start the new year.

  4. Postpublished at 08:47 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    Barty 6-0 1-0 Tsurenko*

The second set continues like the first, with Barty storming through her opening service game. Tsurenko will just be hoping to get a game on the board at the moment.

  5. Postpublished at 08:45 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    *Barty 6-0 Tsurenko

Lesia Tsurenko only won 12 points in that entire opening set and is just being outclassed at the moment.

  6. What has happened so far?published at 08:43 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

British number one Cameron Norrie is out of the Australian Open after a straight set beatdown by Sebastian Korda.

Norrie was beaten 6-3 6-0 6-4 by the rising American star.

It means that Norrie, who enjoyed such a stellar 2021, has lost all four of his matches this season.

"I was never really in the match at all," Norrie said afterwards.

"I played a loose game at the start of every set and he took care of his serve very well. I am disappointed with my level throughout."

  8. 'What can Tsurenko do to change the momentum?'published at 08:43 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    *Barty 6-0 Tsurenko

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't really know what Tsurenko can do differently to get herself back in the match.

What can she do to come out in the second set to try and change the momentum?

  9. Game and first set - Bartypublished at 08:42 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    *Barty 6-0 Tsurenko

Barty's first set point sees a forehand go long, but there's still another on the table.

A forehand goes long from Tsurenko and that is a 24-minute whitewash in that opening set.

A bagel for Tsurenko. Easy, very easy for Barty.

Set points for Ashleigh Barty, who has been flawless.

  11. Postpublished at 08:37 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    Barty 5-0 Tsurenko*

A forehand crosscourt attempt from Tsurenko drifts out and after 19 minutes world number one Ashleigh Barty is already in cruise control.

Five games to her, none to her opponent.

Lesia Tsurenko now serving to stay in the opening set.

  12. 'Barty has another gear to come'published at 08:36 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    *Barty 4-0 Tsurenko

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

It doesn't really even feel like Barty is playing her best tennis.

I feel like she's got another gear or two to come.

  13. Barty gets the double breakpublished at 08:34 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    *Barty 4-0 Tsurenko

Tsurenko, broken in her first service game, flaps a forehand into the net and that is a 0-30 lead as Barty is threatening to run away with this one.

The Australian soon reaches break point and a blocked forehand from the Ukrainian goes long and Barty has stormed into a 4-0 lead in the opening set.

  14. 'Barty much more well-rounded'published at 08:33 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    Barty 3-0 Tsurenko *

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

Barty is just looking a much more well-rounded player than Tsurenko, at this point.

  15. Barty saves two break points to holdpublished at 08:31 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    Barty 3-0 Tsurenko*

It was hard work, but Ashleigh Barty gets through that game after saving two break points to do so.

We've got a half-full Rod Laver Arena after the Australian authorities shut down ticket sales last week because of Covid-19 restrictions.

  16. Postpublished at 08:28 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    *Barty 2-0 Tsurenko

But Tsurenko has a second chance for a break as Barty can only find the tape. The opportunity is not around for long though as Barty drills down an ace to save her second break point.

  17. Postpublished at 08:27 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    *Barty 2-0 Tsurenko

Good fighting spirit from Tsurenko as she battles to earn an immediate break point down.

Barty misses her first serve, but sends in a forehand winner, which is just in to save the immediate danger. Deuce.

  19. Barty breakspublished at 08:24 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    *Barty 2-0 Tsurenko

A disastrous start for the world number 120. It's only taken a few minutes as Ashleigh Barty gets the break of serve at the very first opportunity.

After a lengthy baseline rally, Tsurenko can only send a sliced backhand long and the Australian gives the fans what they are after with an early break.

  20. 'One of her best shots by far'published at 08:23 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    Barty 1-0 Tsurenko *

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

We just had the best view of that Barty slice that went so far wide of the line... and then just dropped in.

It is one of her best shots by far.
