  8. Korda a game away from second roundpublished at 05:26 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    *Norrie 3-6 0-6 3-5 Korda

Korda double faults on the first point of his service game, before following it up with a big 'un out wide that Norrie can't return cleanly.

There's a huge roar as Norrie passes Korda up at the net for 30-30, but the Brit is unfortunate as a backhand takes a bobble off the net and drifts out.

Game point, Korda - oh, and he'll take it as Norrie dumps a smash into the foot of the net! Horrible shot, and Korda is a game away from a crushing win.

  9. Norrie holdspublished at 05:21 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    Norrie 3-6 0-6 3-4 Korda*

Cam Norrie looks skyward as he sends a forehand long, and there's more than a hint of frustration in a smash that takes him to 30-30.

The crowd respond as a clean backhand winner give Norrie game point, and he holds with a one-two punch.

    *Norrie 3-6 0-6 2-4 Korda

Norrie obliterates a backhand winner to get himself on the board, before Korda sends him scampering around the baseline and eventually the error comes from the Brit.

There's been hardly any emotion from Korda, just a little shake of the fist as he wins a meeting at the net to hold to 15.

Also worth remembering that Cam Norrie also had Covid around Christmas.

Like Korda, he had no symptoms but lost a week or so of practice.

"It was not ideal to test positive. Especially in my very, very short off-season – I only had a couple days’ practice and then had to shut it down," he told BBC Sport yesterday.

"I was fortunate enough not to miss any tournaments. But I definitely lost a bit of tennis rhythm, I didn’t play for a while.

"It’s not easy, but I guess it’s something we have to deal with in this day and age."

    Norrie 3-6 0-6 2-3 Korda*

Norrie has started to find his range with the forehand, as back-to-back winners go either side of Korda.

He rattles down a nice ace to wrap up a hold, and keep himself within touching distance of Korda.

  13. Nadal and Berrettini in controlpublished at 05:10 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

He was made to work harder in the second set but Rafael Nadal has it in the bag, going up 6-1 6-4 on American Marcos Giron on Rod Laver Arena.

Elsewhere, Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini is on the brink of reaching the second round, leading Brandon Nakashima by two sets to one after dropping the first.

Nakashima has just saved three match points in the fourth set but is 5-2 down so possibly only delaying the inevitable

This is better from Norrie, a whip of a forehand just kissing the baseline for 30-30 on Korda's serve.

The American has such a good first serve, however, and he uses it to good effect. Two big swipes come swinging down past Norrie as Korda comes through a sticky patch to hold.

“Come on Camerrrrrrrrron!” shouts a British accent.

Norrie needs as much support as he can out here and, as always at Melbourne Park, there are plenty of expats cheering the Brits on.

Three of them are sat on the front row with a Union Jack draped across their knees.

Even they clap heartily when Korda whacks away a ripper of a backhand for that early break.

Cameron Norrie tries to work his way into this third set, finding himself at 15-30 before Seb Korda hits a backhand winner beyond him.

Questions were asked about what shape Seb Korda would be in.

Cam Norrie is finding out the American’s recent isolation after testing positive for Covid has not adversely affected him.

Korda, who had no symptoms, was stuck in his hotel room after arriving in Adelaide, resorting to whacking balls against the wall to stay sharp.

Looks like it helped - even though he took a stray rebound in a delicate area.

Korda seems to have had enough practice since leaving quarantine, moving very well around the court and striking the ball cleanly.
