    Nadal!

Shapovalov looks to have got himself out of trouble thanks to a net cord but Nadal darts forward, gets his racquet underneath and is left in the ideal spot to hammer home a winner.

Shapovalov turns around and gives his support box an absolute earful.

    Nadal 6-3 3-3 Shapovalov*

Nadal races into a 0-30 lead on Shapovalov's serve before the Canadian shows his good hand skills at the net to dab away a winner.

That's a miss on the forehand, though, Shapovalov losing a point he really should have closed out, and Nadal has a break point.

    Nadal 6-3 3-3 Shapovalov*

Frustration for Shapovalov, who is playing much better, as he floats a backhand long.

This time, Nadal can capitalise as he forces Shapovalov out wide with the serve.

    *Nadal 6-3 2-3 Shapovalov

Nadal still can't get his way out of this service game, as Shapovalov saves another break point thanks to some more good defending.

    *Nadal 6-3 2-3 Shapovalov

Shapovalov buries a forehand into the net, but Nadal picks an extremely inopportune moment to double fault.

    Deuce.

  7. Deuce on Nadal servepublished at 04:42 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2022

    *Nadal 6-3 2-3 Shapovalov

This is better from Shapovalov, umpire tantrums aside, and he shows some unbelievable determination from behind the baseline to draw a poor forehand out of Nadal.

That's a bad miss to the Nadal second serve, though, and Shapovalov is furious with himself.

Game point Nadal... oh, and he's missed a forehand! That would have been at outrageous whip as he was stretched out wide, but he's missed it by a little way, and we're at deuce.

    *Nadal 6-3 2-3 Shapovalov

Shot! A glorious passing shot from Nadal wraps up a point after he'd got Shapovalov into an awkward position at the net.

There's trouble brewing for Shapovalov at 0-30 but a couple of errors from Nadal, and a very good serve, help him out of a sticky spot.

    Nadal 6-3 2-2 Shapovalov*

Nadal is a bit rattled, y'know, and he trips into a double fault to go 15-30 down.

Shapovalov gets on top of a rally and then whacks a forehand into the net tape, and that's all the encouragement Nadal needs to reel off two points and hold.

    *Nadal 6-3 1-2 Shapovalov

Huge cheers from the crowd as Nadal darts forward and sends a lovely forehand whizzing through Shapovalov's outstretched racquet.

Some great defence from Nadal as he's on the move behind the baseline, but Shapovalov is at the net to send away the backhand that hands him the hold.

  11. Nadal holdspublished at 04:21 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2022

    Nadal 6-3 1-1 Shapovalov*

Some wild shot-making from a very irritated Shapovalov, although Nadal gifts him an opening with a missed forehand for 40-30.

Great serve from Nadal, though, and Shapovalov can only bunt it long.

    *Nadal 6-3 0-1 Shapovalov

Shapovalov has kicked off again at the umpire!

The umpire makes the very valid point that Nadal still had eight seconds left on the clock. I'm not quite sure what Shapovalov is annoyed about here...

Nadal comes over to the net to speak to Shapovalov, touching him on the arm and, actually, doing a very good job of diffusing the situation.

    *Nadal 6-3 0-1 Shapovalov

Shapovalov, feeling aggrieved that Nadal didn't get a time violation, batters through a love service game.

He might have had a point about the length of time Nadal was taking - although that's nothing new - but you can't be reacting like that. Shapovalov has another mutter at the umpire as he goes back to his chair.

    Nadal 6-3 Shapovalov

    My word.

Denis Shapovalov just told the umpires "you guys are all corrupt" after becoming very unhappy with the amount of time Rafael Nadal was taking to get to the baseline.

What a way to take the first set!

Two more of those and he's into the semi-finals...

Not to matter, as Nadal moves forward nicely to pop away a forehand and give himself two set points.

  19. Postpublished at 04:02 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2022

    Nadal 5-2 Shapovalov*

Shapovalov is sticking in the rallies a little longer now, but there's that extra zip and oomph behind Nadal's shot, and he's just a game away from taking this opening set.

  20. Shapovalov holdspublished at 03:58 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2022

    *Nadal 4-2 Shapovalov

Another good first serve gets Shapovalov's nose in front and he holds with an ace down the T and a yell of "let's go!" to boot.
